Quite refreshed after our hellish traveling day, Beth and I woke up at around 7am, hired a tuk-tuk driver for the day, and got to the temples at around 8am. It was a good thing that we had the driver, because the temples are pretty spread out. Most people get around to see them on mopeds or tuk-tuk, or they come back over multiple days. It was absolutely roasting outside... what a surprise! By the end of the day, I felt as if I were marinating in my own sweat...yuck! But having been in the region for almost a week now, I've pretty much given up on any hope of being adequately clean.
The temples were absolutely fascinating. We ended up going to six different ones, including Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom, and some lesser known temples. I'll upload the pictures (and there are many), because I really don't think I can adequately describe them. All I can say is that we definately did our fair share of climbing. All of the stairs leading up to the tops are incredibly long, incredibly steep, and incredibly scary. I've never really been too afraid of heights, but there were many occasions today when I was actually shaking. This of course, makes it worse, because shaking hands don't allow you to grip too well - if there is something to hold on to at all!
After we saw all of the temples we wanted to see, we decided to stop for a fruit juice at a small food place near Angkor Thom (the one with the tree growing out ofit). Instead, we experienced a lost-in-translation moment. We pointed to the pineapple juice on the menu and indicated that we wanted two of them. Instead, the waitress literally brought us out two entire, cut up, pineapples! A word of wisdom: do not eat too much pineapple because the sweetness will literally burn your mouth and your tongue for a full 24 hours.
