Everyone warned me about taking the Greyhound Bus from Denver to Albuquerque - seriously, how bad could it be - we've taken busses in way worse countries than the US.  No problemo!!  At least that's what I thought.  As soon as dear Allison dropped us off in downtown Denver and said "make sure you hold onto your stuff" I quickly realized why everyone was suggesting alternatives. Looking around the station I seriously think half the people sitting in that room had killed someone!!  Once we got on the half-empty bus to Albuquerque with everyone speaking Spanish we were fine and enjoyed the gorgeous mountainous landscape on our journey to the gorgeous Land of Enchantment.

Dad was waiting for us and my mouth was already watering for some New Mexico hatch green chili so first stop - El Pinto.  We probably ate a basket of chips and salsa each (actually maybe 2 each) and some authentic tamales, enchiladas, and tacos smothered in green chili sauce and cheese - heaven on earth!  If we hadn't put on weight yet, New Mexico sure made up for lost time. We spent a fabulous 6 days with my dad and him playing tour guide to Kristian.  We had lunch in Santa Fe with my cousin Jennifer and her daughter, drove through some New Mexico wilderness, went up the World's Longest Tramway to the top of the Sandias, Kristian impressed my dad with his cooking skills and made a yummy roast dinner, watched the sunset with a margarita on the Indian Reservation, saw Avatar in 3D (you MUST see this movie) and last but not least our favorite event: Luz's mom (a Mexican chef) came over with Luz and her 2 boys to cook us a family-made Mexican dinner!  We had rellenos, beans, Mexican rice, the tastiest green chili sauce I've ever had, and of course a tres-leche cake (although we still can't figure out what the 3 milks are).  Neither of us have ever been so stuffed but we went back for 3rds late that night.  Best meal hands down.  Thank you Dad for having us we loved our visit and had such a great time!!  Love you.

After unthawing Kristian in New Mexico it was time to fly back to Iowa.  We were pretty high above the clouds when the landing gear just popped out - a bit concerning considering we were so high up.  All of a sudden we went into the clouds and within seconds we had touched down - some seriously massive fog, grey drizzle, piles of snow, freezing temps, and we still haven't seen the sun 5 days later!  Welcome back to Iowa.  :)  I love it.

Uncle Tom kindly picked us up from the airport and drove us to the farm.  Grandma and Grandpa gave us huge squeezes and of course a warm meal and tasty baked dessert was awaiting us.  It was so relaxing and Kristian loved them.  Grandpa is still cracking jokes and making everyone laugh and Grandma quickly got to know Kristian with her thousand questions (don't worry he loved talking about himself for 4 days!).  So we've managed to travel for 6 months without any major delays and I knew it was bound to happen at some point - and it's surely going to happen in Iowa!  The day we were meant to take the bus to Cedar Rapids, a massive ice storm hits making travel impossible.  There was .50 inches of solid ice all over everything - including power lines blowing in the wind.  We lost power in the house but Kristian and Grandpa figured out the generator so we could at least have light and heat!  The next day was much better so we were off to Mom's for our last week in the States.

Thank you Grandma and Grandpa for having us!!  It was so nice to show Kristian the farm and the house that I've remembered my whole life.  You have such a welcoming home and I miss you guys already.

So that's that!  The US down.  We've got a few things happening this week then it's off to Africa - back the crazy way we came so another 3-days of travel.  Looking forward to getting back on the road although will be really sad to leave home... it's been perfect.  Speak to you all again from the southern hemisphere!
