After a night in Jakarta, we had an early flight to Padang and a long and scary drive down south from Padang to Cubadak Island. We were met at the pier at a small village by a speed boat for the 10 min journey. The island is exactly as it is named - Paradiso! Its like Gilligan's Island and castaway wrapped up into one.Our room is down a long pier - quite a way from the other cottages - we have a deck and can dive straight off into the coral reef. We've been supplied with snorkel, goggles and fins and have been swimming amongst the fish. It would be great to have an underwater camera - angel fish, eels, sea urchins, tropical fish of all colours as well as schools of thousands of small fish all hanging out at the bottom of our cottage. Its a bit like being on a boat with the creaking timbers all around us.Life is at a slow pace here - our french hosts are hospitable and we have punctuated our days with meals, lots of reading, swimming, listening to music etc. We forgot the scrabble - so no friendly rivalry this trip! The view is amazing - but unfortunately we can see the deforestation of Sumatra and can hear the chain saws in the distance. I wonder why they are not promoting planting trees to offset carbon emissions here, instead of cutting them down.A couple more days here and then we are off to Bukkitinggi in the highlands - to see the culture, the beautiful scenery and search for textiles!Until then, more sun and swimming!
