Our friendly waiter told us it hardly rains in Piran. Apparently last year it rained 30 days and that was a shock….well it rained everyday bar our last for five days we were in Piran. At stages the sun would shine, just enough for us to sip our espressos at a café on the main promenade, staring out to the water. However when the rain came down in came down hard.
Piran is a beautiful little fishing port town. It is very small and easy to navigate around the narrow alley like streets. Its Venetian style bell tower overlooks the whole port. Piran also has a beautiful city wall and castle, which you can easily walk up to and walk around what is left of the city wall. Up here is one of the best views. Over in the far distance you can see Italy.
Piran is famous for seafood restaurants. Something we love, so each night we treated ourselves to extremely fresh and delicious seafood. Our first night, with our friendly waiter mentioned earlier, was our best meal. As it is no longer high season, the tourists have all gone home, so it was a quiet night in the restaurant. Our friend brought as free fishpaste and toasted bread as entrée, followed by our mains (grilled calamari and marinara spaghetti) and then also gave us free dessert. Did I forget to mention we had a 10% discount card from our hostel.
Our days were mainly spent dodging the downpour between sitting in cafes. Although it was raining it was still (only just) warm enough to swim. Most days after a morning run we would jump off the rocks on the edge of the promenade and have a little swim. The water was beautiful and clear, with many fish.
One evening worth noting, we were having drinks at a wine bar, when this young couple were sitting on the benches infront of the bar, having a domestic. Brett and I watched with amusment (as it is always funny when you are not the couple involved). Anyway this young guy was telling off his girlfriend when it started to get serious and we noticed that he would, between yelling, punch her. She didn't seem to defend herself, she just cried and tried to kiss him. When she was keeled over on the ground I said to Brett "I’m gonna say something.." Brett and I got up and walked over to them. I looked around the bar and another tourist looked at me and said “It’s f*ed up isn’t it”, so he joined us as we confronted this guy. Brett asked her is she was ok and told him to ease up she's only a girl but it was not a successful confrontation. After we told them what we had been seeing and said he has to stop, the girl actually told us in broken English to “please leave us alone”. I guess you can't help people who don't want to help themselves.
Finally one our last day in Piran we woke up and to our surprise the sun was shining. It was such a beautiful day. We decided we had to enjoy every second of the sunshine, so we packed up our books and headed to the rocks to soak up the sun. We layed on the rocks reading our books between swims. Then finished the day sipping beer as the sun went down over the water. It was absolutely beautiful and just what we'd imagined our time in Piran to be.
