Like the good parents they are, Justin and Bronwen sent us on our way with a mini cooler filled with sandwiches, strawberries, carrots, hummus and pita chips. We are grateful beyond belief. Plus, the roasted pine nuts hummus is to die for.

We decided to stick to our coastal route so we left Highway 101 and took 128 to Hwy 1. Surprisingly, 128 was beautiful and lined with vineyards and redwoods. If we had the time and money, we would've definitely stopped for a wine-tasting…or two. But instead, we continued on our merry way until we realized we weren’t in Marin anymore.

More redwoods greeted us at every turn and no matter how many groves you drove through, you never stop being amazed at how awesome they are.

In Humboldt County, we drove one last time through the big redwood drive-thru tree in Leggett, CA. Further north, we cruised through the Avenue of the Giants, which is a road that’s lined with redwoods and runs parallel to 101.

Around Orick, CA we ended up at an elk meadow, where we were able to get out of the car and take a few pictures of elk and then watch an amazing sunset.

Once we arrived in Crescent City it was too late to set up camp, so we decided to find place to stay indoors. We settled on the Curly Redwood Lodge, which was built out of a single redwood tree. It was very mid-century/modern and had free wifi, so we decided to spend the night there. Tomorrow, we’ll head into Jed Smith S.P.
