Where I stayed
Jolie and Ryan's place by the beach
After fueling up with two medium coffees, a ham, egg and cheese croissant for Bret and an egg and cheese bagel for me from Café Capriccio, we're ready to hit the road by about 9:30am.
First stop: Newport Beach, where we’ll stay with our friends Jolie Smith and Ryan Bachman. They actually used to live only four blocks away from us in San Francisco before they moved to SoCal for Ryan’s new job.
In case you’re wondering what we’re doing driving south, here’s the plan.
Bret has always wanted to drive along the coast from San Diego to Seattle, so we figured, why not add that drive to our road trip? So after Newport Beach, we’ll be heading to San Diego
and then driving and camping our way back up to Seattle, which might take about a week and a half.
After Seattle, here are some of the stops we’ll be making: Coeur d’Alene (ID), Grand Tetons and Yellowstone (WY), Badlands and Mt. Rushmore (SD), Minneapolis, maybe Madison, Chicago,
Evansville (IN), Bourbon Trail (KY), Appalachians (WV), Richmond (VA) and then Alexandria/DC.
Hence, the name of this blog, Border to Border, Coast to Coast.
We’re looking forward to spending time with friends and family along the way.
We’d also like the chance to get our car in order. Right now it’s packed to the brim and Bret can barely see out the back window and my legs are crammed into one tiny bottom right corner in
front of the passenger’s seat. (Click on the image of our car above for our first video!)
Today, after dealing with a little Friday rush hour traffic in LA, we arrive at Jolie and Ryan’s right around 6pm. We drink some beers, spend time catching up since we hadn’t really hung out with
them since our wedding in April 2011, and grab some sandwiches and fish at Summer House for dinner.

I want to be y'all when I grow up.
Have a fun trip guys!! Can't wait to see more updates.
Ryan and I were so happy y'all came down to visit with us, the nagging will now cease. Sharing our new life in SoCal with you and hearing about your new life to come was wonderful. Come back soon or we will see you 1) in our hometown neck of the woods, Southeast 2) New York, New York! xoo
Wait one minute. You're coming to Seattle? Let me know when!! Do you need a place to stay?
Hey, when you go through the midwest (madison, chicago area) stop off at my parents house in Janesville. They would love to see y'all again and would take you out to the club for a good meal and you can stay with them for a night too. Give me or Jared a call if you are interested!
Packed car!! You're so homeless! :D
