Where I stayed
One Prague Hostel
I woke up on the downstairs lobby couch after catching maybe a total of 1 hour sleep. It was about 8 AM now so I spoke with the staff and they felt really bad about what happened to me. They agreed to give me my money back for the night and move us to a different room as soon as the guys were up. I took a thorough shower and separated all my clothes by ones that may have been exposed from those that were not so I could do a heavy wash when possible. Since it was still super early and I knew the guys wouldn't be up I just watched another movie, spent some time on the computer, made myself breakfast and hung out until about 10 AM. At that time the guys needed to get up so we could check out of that room, check into our new room and I wanted to catch the 10:30 AM free walking tour. By the way, I definitely had bed bugs and they completely tore me up. I felt like shit and it didn’t help that I was covered in red bumps making me look like I have a disease, fantastic on vacation
As expected the guys were not up for doing anything at that time so I headed for Old Town Center and the bell tower where the meet up point for the tour began. After familiarizing myself with the area and finding the tour starting point for the 11 AM tour, I waited and met some Americans that were also going to be participating. The free walking tour of Prague was led by a cool older American native who has lived in Prague the last 2 years as a tour guide. He was very energetic, slightly humorous and had some very informative history of this wonderful city. We visited the Tyn Church, Charles University, Municipal House, Wenceslas Square, National Theatre, Charles Bridge, Jewish Quarter, Bethlehem Chapel and much more. I learned a lot more about Czech history and its place within the eastern European development and also discovered that Prague has amazingly unique architecture. The tour lasted a little over 2.5 hours and I gladly tipped him about $5 at the end for his efforts.
After the tour was over I was intending on hopping straight over to another tour starting at 2 PM that visited other locations I did not see but the timing was off. Not wanting to make my way all the way back on the metro to the hostel only in a blind effort to meet the guys I just decided to go see some attractions by myself before I called it a day. After puzzling over the tram system I figured out how to make it over the Vltava River that runs right through Prague and over to the Prague Castle. The castle was absolutely gorgeous. Exceptional architecture, grand size and the pure peaceful beauty of it set the castle apart from many that I have seen on my travels thus far. The actual conglomeration of Royal Buildings making up the Castle and its attached annexes formulates one of the largest (if not largest I believe) Royal structures in Europe
After my solo tour I made my way back to the hostel to get some food and wait on the guys. I made some of the pork from the night before and while cooking I conversed with a group of girls from Georgia (USA). The UGA grads Kate, Lindsey and Sarah were very nice and I enjoyed talking with them about traveling and also their plans for the night. Coincidentally it was their last night in Prague as well as ours so we decided to all go out together for some Friday nightlife. I found the guys a few minutes later in the computer room catching up on life and they told me about their wonderful day as well. Lucie, our awesome host/bartender at the hostel, graciously gave them a few hour tour of Prague during the day allowing them to see a good bit of the city like myself. They headed up for more sleep and I hung out in the lobby and lounge until they would be up for going out later.
After the guys woke, showered and changed we went downstairs to the basement bar for cheap beers and to watch the Ghana versus Uruguay soccer match before going out. While having drinks the Georgia girls had caught up with us and we all decided to hit Golden Tree again for the night
We made it to Golden Tree shortly after 2 AM and everyone loved the place. Just like Rob and I’s first exposure the clubbing, techno, lounges, bars and strip club all made everyone’s evening. We spent a lot of time with the Georgia girls and enjoyed some shots, beers and dancing in the lightshow until we were all worn out. At around 4 AM we decided to head back for the hostel and most/all of the large crowd joined. Back at the hostel we were less than quiet. Over 20 drunk people all hungry as hell made our way into the kitchen and prowled over all the food we had left in the multiple fridges. Spaghetti, pork, eggs, bread and various other drunk food filled our stomachs and by that time the insomnia started kicking in and we all crashed. We had a 10:30 AM train for Berlin and I was just hoping I could sleep decently without anymore bugs. (Insert FML moment).
Prague was a really cool place. It has more beauty and history than I ever imagined and I could have definitely enjoyed another day or so (minus bugs) to see more of this great city. Each time I saw the Vltava River it was busy with boats and sails gracefully breaking the flat running water. I would have loved to have a day on a small sailboat and just cruise the river to enjoy the viewpoint of the city from there. I would have also liked to make one of the multiple side excursions offered that visit just outside of the main city area to various other astonishing landmarks. Despite the bugs, trashy Eastern-Europe feeling and stupid monetary system the beauty, architecture and women more than made Prague one of my favorite destinations so far. Back to Germany tomorrow and just in time for the next Germany world cup game!
