We pulled up stakes on Saturday morning and left Rockport for a short drive to the much larger city of Chicago to visit Antonio, an old friend of Brent's that he was also stationed with in the UK several years ago. The haven't seen each other in about 7 years and since Chicago is Antonio's hometown, he graciously agreed to be our tour guide over the bustling holiday weekend. We could couldn't have asked for a better host to take us around his awesome city!
Since it was a very nice holiday weekend, as well as the last weekend of summer for Chicago, the city was absolutely heaving with people. There were tons of activities going on including street fairs, art shows and festivals all over. Thankfully, Antonio knows the city like the back of his hand and we were probably able to see and do more in two days than most people do in a week! We would have never been able to figure out the walking, buses, trains and underground in such a short time without him!
Chicago is huge (over 3 million people), so after arriving at about 3pm on Saturday, Antonio quickly had us out and about to see the best parts of his city...we took in the Sears Tower, 505 Lake Shore Drive (where Oprah has an entire floor) the new Trump Bldg, Navy Pier, the beaches along Lake Michigan and some of the amazing architecture.
We must have walked 50 miles on Saturday afternoon! The ferry ride to Navy Pier was a welcome break and showed off the Chicago Skyline. We had dinner on the pier at a Chicago Style BBQ joint, listening to live Jazz and Blues music. We hit the bars for drinks soon after and did not make it back to the Eagle until 4am. We slept in late but managed to be back in this fantastic city for dinner at one of Antonio's favorite restaurants. We decided we had not had enough Alcohol so we set out to the bars again!!
Thanks again Antonio we would not seen half of what we did without you, and of course your hilarious way of presenting things made it a truly memorable weekend.
