On March 25th, 2007 I got on a plane from Edinburgh to Amsterdam Schipol Airport to see my girlfriend. She studies in Ukraine so I wasn't at Schipol for long before I hopped on another plane to Kyiv. This was my second visit to Ukraine. My first was only 3 months earlier, and that time I stayed at Schipol overnight so I was able to see some of Amsterdam in the evening.
My luggage didn't arrive with me in Kyiv. Fortunately, it was delivered to the address where I was staying free of charge the next evening.
On my second full day in Kyiv we went to Pirogovo, the open air museum of Ukrainian folk culture and architecture. It is really big, like a safari park or theme park or something. But instead of animals there are lots of Ukrainian cottages and windmills. No one lives in them and they are supposed to show what life was like hundreds of years ago. However, I imagine life today is not much different for many living in rural Ukraine today. Many in the rural villages still don't have central heating or electricity. Each few acres of the museum is dedicated to a certain region of Ukraine, and all the cottages are attractive and a little different from each other.
Here are a couple of the windmills:
