We arrived Sunday after a long 12 hour bus trip. Selcuk and the surrounding area has so delighted us we lengthened our stay. This truly has felt like a vacation. We have explored the ancient ruins of ephesus, sitting in the 25,000 seat theater that facilitated gladiator fights till the gory end two thousand years ago and been surprised with the history of this area- It holds the supposed house of Mary in her last years, a prison for Paul, and the burial place of both Mary and John. The surrounding country side is beautiful with olive trees covering the hill sides producing olives for oil and soap. We been in awe at the history marked in this area since time began, tasted the sweet fruit wine from the village Sirince, and found ourselves addicted to the Turkish meatballs sizzling in olive oil with cheese, tomatos and onions served with flat bread hot from the oven on the side. It is cherry season allowing us to buy cherries at 4 Turkish lira a Kilogram, or 2.70 USD per 2.2 pounds, cheap. Weather has been phenomenal, a steady 20 degrees celcius, making it possible to keep our window open all night and all day. The call to prayer is a constant reminder, five times per day, of where we are in the world. Turkey has been an excellent choice for our starting country, we had no idea we would enjoy it so much, it was just a cheap ticket at the start.
