Previously, on the Almost Amazing e-Race: teams fled Europe as if the plague had hit, and found themselves in Cote D'Ivoire in western Africa. A physically demanding Roadblock led to Penne breaking down, while Buddy found a new calling in cacao-pod harvesting. Lynda & Chhitij got flustered by flocking fowls at the Detour, and Phil & Sean mused at matching masks. Bray was arrested by the Alliteration Police. Glora & Kay and Bess & Fidel went head-to-head for the Fast Forward, and it was the Playmates who came off second-best. Glora & Kay were the first team to check in at the Pitstop, while the Playmates lagged behind and were the last to arrive. However, in an unexpected twist, it turned out that Sarah & Buddy had been kidnapped by rebels. Let's see how those negotiations went...

This is Basilique de Notre Dame de la Paix de Yamoussoukro, the largest non-Mormon place of Christian worship in the world. This enormous cathedral, which was modeled on St. Pauls in Rome, was the 4th pitstop in a race around the world. Teams ate, slept and mingled. Except no teams mingled (or slept) with Bess & Fidel, since they are now the most despised team in the race. The anti-Romber conspiracy launched at Dean & Penne over the last few legs seems to have died down now that Bess is showing her true colours.

Glora & Kay, who arrived at 11:30am will depart at 11:30pm.
"Did you see the way Buddy was looking at me at dinner time?" Kay asks Glora.
"No. What about it?"
"It was just a bit disconcerting, is all," says Kay.
"Well, they're my favourite team anyway, and I like that Buddy looks at you like that," says Glora.
They tear open their clue, and Kay reads it out:
Fly to Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania, and then catch a flight to Pemba Island, Zanzibar. Once there, take a taxi to Chake Chake and swim to the buoy in the lagoon, where you can retrieve your next clue.
"Sweet! I'm gunna go fight the Zanzibarbarians," says Kay.

23:33 - Phil & Sean depart the pitstop. "Zanzibar! How awesome is that?!" asks Sean. "I was hoping it would be Madagascar," says Phil, "I'd rock this leg if it was Madagascar."
01:32 - Dave & Boon-Mee depart the pitstop. "Eeeeeeyyyyyyy!!!" squeals Boon-Mee, "We go Zanzibar! I wonders if they have grilled turtle in Zanzibars? I miss not eating turtle on race."
01:45 - Lynda & Chhitij depart the pitstop. "Zanzibar, baby!" says Chhitij.
01:49 - Dean & Penne tear open their clue. They say nothing.
03:44 - Bess & Fidel depart the pitstop. Bess hits Fidel for no reason. He whimpers.
03:45 - Sarah & Buddy, who freed themselves from their kidnappers by simply showing the rebels how absolutely, utterly awesome they are, open their clue. "Zanzibar's a real place?" asks Buddy.

All teams meet up at the Yamoussoukro International Airport (another legacy of that wacky president). Since it's the middle of the night, they have to wait until morning for the terminal to open. Glora & Kay are sitting on a bench when Sarah & Buddy arrive. Buddy sits himself down next to Kay and starts making kissy-lips. Sarah kindly voices-over for us: "Buddy doesn't care if Kay is a guy.  Buddy swings both ways.  Regardless of anything, Buddy thinks Kay is hot.  Buddy just wishes that Kay was upfront with his gender. Buddy thinks taboo sex is hot."
Glora voices over: "Kay's too nice to throw Buddy off his scent, but maybe he's getting a hint? If I actually told Kay, he'd probably get all freaked out and paranoid. Like that time when he thought the busboy was perving on him in the shower when said busboy touched him near his butt area. Kay says butt touching amongst strange males is taboo... even though shower room towel whipping amongst friends is perfectly fine."
Buddy puts his hand on Kay's knee. Kay gets up and sits on the other side of Glora. Buddy makes puppy-dog eye at him. Kay pulls down his sleeping mask and tries to ignore him.

[Thank Gloria and Sarah for this story turning gay. I think they're conspiring together, because what I put above is exactly what they sent in.]

ANYWAY! The next morning the airport opens. Glora & Kay, Dave & Boon-Mee and Phil & Sean have found a Pan Africa flight that departs Yamoussoukro at 18:00 the next day and connects to Dar-es-Salaam in Tanzania via a stopover in Kano, Nigeria.
Sarah & Buddy worked with Lynda & Chhitij (their old allies from the Better-Than-You Alliance) to secure seats on East Africa Airlines flight to Dar-es-Salaam via a stop-over in Nairobi, Kenya, departing Yamoussoukro at 20:00. Bess sends Fidel to listen in on their plans and they book the same flight. Dean & Penne somehow randomly wind up on it too.

Since the teams are waiting all day, some of them decide to go back into the town. Lynda & Chhitij return to the Pitstop to get married in the basilica, but have no luck tracking down a priest. Dave & Boon-Mee go down to the river to see the washermen washing the clothes on old car tyres, as is typical in Cote D'Ivoire. Boon-Mee gets in and shows them how women wash clothes. Sarah & Buddy track down their kidnappers, wow them with their awesomeness once again and tell them that they're on their way to Zanzibar. Phil wishes he could have gone to Tai National Park because he'd read a paper about frog research there. Glora bitches about how Bess give them the finger last episode. Bess is playing a game with Fidel where he has to play in the gutter with the stray dogs and she gets to laugh at him. Dean & Penne don't do or say anything.

After 2 pages, the teams are finally getting the hell on with the race.
18:00 - Glora & Kay, Dave & Boon-Mee and Phil & Sean depart on Pan Africa, bound for Kano.
20:00 - Sarah & Buddy, Lynda & Chhitij, Bess & Fidel and Dean & Penne depart on East Africa Air for Nairobi.
21:30 - Glora & Kay, Dave & Boon-Mee and Phil & Sean arrive in Kano and sit around in an airport some more.

The next day...

06:00 - Sarah & Buddy, Lynda & Chhitij, Bess & Fidel and Dean & Penne arrive at Nairobi Airport, the largest and busiest in Africa. "I reckon we can get a better flight from here," says Lynda to Chhitij. "Let's look around."
06:30 - Glora & Kay, Dave & Boon-Mee and Phil & Sean depart Kano for Dar-es-Salaam.
11:00 - Lynda & Chhitij (Dating) catch a sly flight on Kenya Airways to Dar-es-Salaam. "We're pulling a Glora Croft move here," says Lynda sneakily.
11:30 - Sarah & Buddy, Bess & Fidel and Dean & Penne depart Nairobi on the last leg of their Pan Africa flight. "Lynda & Chhitij have disappeared on us. They've broken the last straw in our alliance," says Sarah. "It's just you and me now, Buddy." "And Kay, hopefully," says Buddy. "You'll just have to work on that angle," says Sarah encouragingly.
13:00 - Lynda & Chhitij (Dating) land in Dar-es-Salaam. They find the domestic terminal and search for flights out to the islands of Zanzibar. "There's one with Coastal at 14:00 and a Zanair flight at 15:15," says Lynda. "So we're on the Coastal flight," adds Chhitij. "The agent said there's only four seats left, so one of the teams from the next flight isn't going to make it."

13:30 - Dean & Penne, Sarah & Buddy and Bess & Fidel arrive at Dar-es-Salaam. When they see Lynda & Chhitij sitting in the Coastal departure lounge, a race to the Coastal ticket counter erupts. Bess & Fidel (Playmates) arrive first, followed closely by Sarah & Buddy (Shared Hallucination). Dean & Penne (Tweedle-Dee & Tweedle Dum) end up at the back of the queue. And... Dean & Penne miss out on tickets.
14:00 - The Coastal flight takes off for Pemba Island carrying Lynda & Chhitij, Sarah & Buddy and Bess & Fidel.

14:30 - Glora & Kay, Dave & Boon-Mee and Phil & Sean arrive Dar-es-Salaam meet up with Dean & Penne, where they have to take the Zanair flight.
15:05 - Lynda & Chhitij, Sarah & Buddy and Bess & Fidel touch down on the tropical isle of Pemba and all hail taxis to Chake Chake.
15:15 - The Zanair flight carrying the remaining teams departs.
15:20 - Lynda & Chhitij, Sarah & Buddy and Bess & Fidel arrive at Chake Chake and take to the crystal-clear water. Lynda and Chhitij swim strongly, collect the clue from the buoy and return to shore. Buddy and Fidel, meanwhile, are having a lot of trouble.
15:26 - Back on shore, Lynda & Chhitij read their next clue:

Take a taxi to Mkoani harbour on the south end of Pemba Island, and hire a dhow to take you Mkokotoni on Unguja, the main island of Zanzibar. Search for the cluebox at the Mkokotoni harbour.

They jump in their taxi and take off.

15:34 - Sarah drags Buddy back to shore, while Fidel almost downs and has to have a boat sent to rescue him. Bess notices that there's a Fast Forward. "Lynda & Chhitij have already used their Fast Forward, so they can't have gone for this one," says Fidel. Bess hits him, "How many times do I have to tell you that you're only allowed to talk in playmate language? If you keep talking in English, I'll through you back in the water. But I like your thinking. Lets do this Fast Forward thing."
Fast Forward - You do voodoo? Take a taxi 10kms to the deserted town of Pujini and search the ruins for a witchdoctor, who will put a curse on another team. However, before you go to Pujini, you will first need to stock up on a few items. Go to the Chake Chake markets and buy a small bundle of raffia and a live chicken.

Five minutes later the Playmates arrive at the markets and five minutes after that succeed in buying a white chook. Next they get some raffia, grown locally on the island, and catch a taxi for Pujini.

15:51 - Lynda & Chhitij arrive at Mkoani and find a dhow in the harbour. They take off under the power of the wind in the large triangle sail and slip across the harbour into the warm waters of the Indian Ocean.
15:04 - Sarah & Buddy arrive at Mkoani and take a dhow.

Meanwhile, Bess & Fidel (Playmates) are searching the deserted building in the ruined city of Pujini. They eventually find one with smoke issuing from the roof and find the witchdoctor inside. He communes with the spirits for a bit, then asks Bess & Fidel to use the raffia they bought to make figures of the team they wish to place a curse upon. "That bitch Glora Croft and her imaginary boyfriend," says Bess. "They stole our Fast Forward from right under our nose, so now they're going to pay..."
When the figurines are made, the witchdoctor takes the chook - which has been happily scratching around the floor of the hut for fleas - and tears its head off. He pours the blood over the raffia dolls and then throws them into the fire. The ashes rise up and out of the stuffy hut and disappear into the sky.

"Glora & Kay will have bad luck next leg," says the witchdoctor, handing them their next clue.
Travel by taxi to the harbour at Mkoani, and catch a dhow to Mkokotoni on Unguja Island. Then, using one of the marked cars, drive yourself to Stone Town and make your way on foot to the pitstop at the Arab Fort.

16:30 - Dean & Penne, Glora & Kay, Dave & Boon-Mee and Phil & Sean touch down on Pemba Island and get taxis to the lagoon at Chake Chake.
16:44 - Bess & Fidel (1st) arrive at Mkoani and board their dhow for Mkokotoni.
16:45 - Dean & Penne, Glora & Kay, Dave & Boon-Mee and Phil & Sean arrive at Chake Chake and begin swimming out to the buoy. Phil & Sean (Good Friends) are the first team to finish and decide to use the Fast Forward. They walk off to the markets. Glora & Kay (Australia's Last Line of Crack) are the next team back to the beach and take their taxi to Mkoani. Next is Dean & Penne (Tweedle-Dee & Tweedle Dum), and Dave & Boon-Mee (Good Mates) are the last team back thanks to Boon-Mee's thrashing around like a wounded porpoise.

17:03 - Phil & Sean arrive at the chicken stall to buy a chook for the Fast Forward witchdoctor. "Ah, you in race too?" asks the lady at the stall. "Yes," says Phil. "Another team has already bought a chicken?" The lady nods enthusiastically. "It's been all been done," says Phil. "We've got to go to the harbour instead."

17:20 - Glora & Kay and Phil & Sean arrive at the Mkoani harbour at the same time, tied for 4th place, and grab their dhows. Dean & Penne (6th) and Dave & Boon-Mee (last) arrive not long after.

All teams are now sailing south from Pemba Island to Unguja Island, the main island of Zanzibar, aboard traditional Arab dhows. As sun sets and the boats sail across the glassy waters of the Indian Ocean, the racers have this to say...

Sarah: "This is absolutely wonderful.  I am so glad that the rebels discovered how cool we are and gave us God status.  They built this dhow for us and are serving our every need.  If only Glora and Kay were able to be here."
Glora: "What's a dhow?"
Kay: "Finally a chance for some shut eye!"
Bess: "Mmm, yes, noice."
Phil: "Hey, I'm enjoying a particularly relaxing cruise on a dhow".
Dave: "It was particularly relaxing on the dhow!!! We enjoyed it!!!"

07:51 - The next morning, Lynda & Chhitij are the first team to arrive at Mkokotoni. They find the cluebox on the harbour wall and pull a Detour.
Detour - Caves or Cloves

Caves
Using one of the marked cars, drive yourselves to Mangapawni Caves, 30kms south of here. Once at the caves, descend into the cavern where captive black slaves were hidden in colonial days, and search for an alternative route out. Despite the maze of tunnels there is only one way out, and your next clue will be waiting at the surface by this exit. This task is not suited to those with poor navigation skills.

Cloves
Using one of the marked cars, drive yourselves to the Spice Co-operative Warehouse at Mangapawni, 30kms south of here. You must search through three sacks of dried cloves to find a single fresh, red clove. Once you have found it, you will be given your next clue. This task is not physically difficult, but is not recommended for those with little patience.

Lynda & Chhitij decide to do Cloves and take off for the spice warehouse in Mangapawni.

08:04 - Sarah & Buddy (Shared Hallucination) sail into the Mkokotoni harbour and find their next clue (3rd). They thank their ex-captors profusely for the dhow-ride and take off for the spice warehouse, having also decided to do the Clove option.

08:16 - Lynda & Chhitij arrive at the spice warehouse. They find their sacks and tear one open. They tip the cloves onto the cement floor and start searching through them for the fresh red one.
08:23 - Sarah & Buddy arrive at the warehouse and open their first sack of dried cloves. Sarah is almost bowled over by the strong smell. Meanwhile, Lynda begins panicking at the arrival of their foes, and starts freaking out. Chhitij calms her down and gets her working again.

08:33 - Lynda & Chhitij (Dating) find their red clove. They receive their next clue:
Drive to Stone Town in Zanibar City, 20kms south of here, and find Beit-al-Ajaib (the House of Wonders)

Team Dating leaves the warehouse and heads south to Zanzibar's capital.

08:44 - Bess & Fidel (Playmates) sail into the Mkokotoni harbour and find their car. Having won the Fast Forward, they take off towards the pitstop in Stone Town.
08:50 - Phil & Sean (Two Dwarves and Another Dwarf) and Glora & Kay (Australia's Last Line of Defense) arrive at Mkokotoni faster than anticipated thanks to strong winds during the night. They both quickly decide on the Caves detour and take off for Mangapawni.

08:53 - Lynda & Chhitij (Team Dating) arrive at Stone Town. They find they cannot take their cars into the old-city, so they push on on foot. Chhitij stops to ask some old men sitting outside a house for direction to the House of Wonders, and his niceness is rewarded with good directions.

08:54 - Dean & Penne (Team Haven't Submitted A Survey In Like Three Legs) arrive at the Mkokotoni harbour in 6th place. They choose the Clove detour.
Meanwhile, at said Detour, Sarah & Buddy (Shared Hallucination) have finally found the red clove, having had to open a second sack. Also, Buddy panicked at bit and Sarah had to make him shut up.

09:11 - Bess & Fidel (Playmates) arrive at Stone Town and take off for the Arab Fort on foot. Meanwhile, Lynda & Chhitij (2nd) arrive at the House of Wonders and find this week's Roadblock: "Where's the ka-boom?"
The Beit-al-Ajaib (House of Wonders) was the battle-field for what is today referred to as 'The Shortest War in History'. To reenact this event, one team member must properly pack an antique cannon with power, wadding and a cannon-ball, and successfully fire a shot into the harbour. The task requires strength and precision.

Lynda takes the task and begins to pack her cannon.

09:14 - Sarah & Buddy arrive at Stone Town and start searching for the House of Wonders.
09:15 - Glora & Kay (Team Dating) arrive at the Mangapawni Caves, followed by Phil & Sean (Good Friends) four minutes later. They descend into the old slave caves and find torches to use in their quest for another exit.

09:19 - Lynda is confident she's loaded her cannon correctly and fires it. There's an almighty ka-boom, but the cannon-ball doesn't make it to the harbour, instead landing pathetically on the foreshore. "For Fuck Sakes!!!" she screams, and then sets about loading another cannonball.

09:21 - Dean & Penne (Tweedle Dum & Tweedle Dee) arrive at the Mangapawni Spice Co-operative Warehouse. They launch into the task without a word.
09:26 - Dave & Boon-Mee (Good Mates) finally arrive at Mkokotoni in last place. They lost all wind at one stage and their dhow had come to a standstill, putting them half an hour behind the next teams. They get the Detour and opt for Caves.

Meanwhile... Bess & Fidel arrive at the pitstop. "Bess & Fidel, you are team number one!" says Bray. "Yay! Yay Yayyity Yay! Yay!" says Bess hugging Fidel. "Woof Woof." "Also, I have some bad news," says Bray, "...most-everybody left in the race hates you." "Der," says Bess, "but I get to pick the next country, so poo on them."

09:27 - Lynda has re-loaded her cannon and lights the wick. She steps back with her hands over her ears and BOOM! Success, the cannonball lands in the harbour with a big splash. She & Chhitij hug and then she opens the next clue:
Make your way on foot through the labyrinthine streets of Stone Town to the Pitstop at Arabs Fort. The last team to check in may be eliminated.

09:34 - Sarah & Buddy (3rd) find the House of Wonder (partly though the ka-booming resonating from it). Sarah takes the Roadblock when she sees it involves potentially destroying things, and starts loading her cannon. Buddy sits around hoping Kay will hurry up and arrive.

Meanwhile, Lynda & Chhitij (2nd) - on their way to the pitstop - are really lost in the maze of Stone Town's backstreets.

Speaking of Kay, he and Glora are lost in the caves. Phil & Sean (4th), meanwhile, have found the exit and climb out into a field where they find their next clue.
Phil: They can't stop us. We're on a mission from God.
Sean: Hey, since you said that, doesn't that make me the short fat one?
Phil: If it makes you feel any better, I'm sure you'd look great in a tux.
Sean: I'm not keen on blues anyway. You know I'm into funk.
Phil: Sean, who ever heard of the Funk Brothers?
Anyway, the Models get in their car and drive to Zanzibar City in their quest for Stone Town.

09:44 - Sarah lights the fuse on her cannon, but after several minutes there's no ka-boom. Where's the ka-boom? There's supposed to be an earth-shattering ka-boom! She sets to work unpacking the cannon and trying to load it again.

Lynda & Chhitij are still lost on their way to the pitstop, and are getting desperate.

Dean & Penne (Tweedle-Dum & Tweedle-Smart) are on to their second sack and both have lost patience. They're yelling and screaming at each other in a very unproductive way and not paying any attention to the task at hand, as is the wont of so many racers these days. Mary.

09:45 - Dave & Boon-Mee (Good Mates) arrive at the Mangapawni Caves (last). They descend into the cavern and start searching for another way out. "Find the back way, Davey," orders Boon-Mee. "We need to find back way out."
09:50 - Lynda & Chhitij (Dating) finally locate the pitstop. They run up to the mat in front of the fortress doors and jump on. "Lynda & Chhitij, you are team number two!"

09:54 - Sarah has her cannon repacked and fires it. It actually works this time, but the shot misses the harbour so she has to do it all again.
09:58 - Phil & Sean (Good Friends) arrive at Stone Town. They, being themselves, are uber-nice to the locals and swing themselves a friendly kid to lead them to the House of Wonders.
10:00 - Glora & Kay finally find their way out of the caves. "We got really, really lost in there," says Glora. "I think I could hear another team in there, but it could have just been our own echos. But I think screwing up this detour could put us out of the race..."
10:03 - "Ahhhhh, here is!" says Boon-Mee as they stumble across the exit of the caves. "The back way! I knew it be here. I had to show Davey where back way is. He just want to go back out front entrance, but I tell him he not allowed to use front entrance, only back way!"
[I'm so going to hell]

10:04 - On her third attempt, Sarah fires her cannonball into the harbour. She and Buddy take off for the pitstop in 3rd place.

10:10 - Phil & Sean arrive at the House of Wonders, thanks to their friendly guide. Sean decides to take the Roadblock. He sets to work loading the cannon while Phil lies back on the grass and pulls out his battered copy of Soul Music and continues reading. Seven minutes later, thanks to Sean's strength and accuracy, a cannon-ball lands in the harbour. The boys get their clue to the pitstop and take off in fourth place.
10:20 - Glora & Kay (Australia's Last Line of Defense) and Dave & Boon-Mee (Good Mates) arrive at Stone Town and plunge into the labyrinthine streets in search of the House of Wonders.
10:23 - Sarah & Buddy (Shared Syringes) arrive at the Arabs Fort. "Sarah & Buddy, you are team number three!" says Bray. They're happy, and hug and kiss and then wish Kay could join them for an imaginary-friend-threesome.
10:32 - Phil & Sean arrive at the pitstop. "Phil & Sean, you're team number two-hundred-thousand-and-seventy-four. Or probably just team number four. I'm so sick of this job right now."

Dean & Penne (Tweedle-Dum & Tweedle-Dee) are still back at the spice factory, on to their third bag of cloves, still yelling at each other and now throwing spice at each other.

10:37 - Glora & Kay arrive at the House of Wonders. Upon seeing the cannons, Kay declares that he's going to do the task. "I'm going up against the Zanzibarbarians, and I'm going to win!" he declares. "Um, Kay... have you forgotten what we learned in Military History class? It was the Zanzibarians who were fighting from the House of Wonders, so you're actually going up against the British Navy. Good luck there."
10:42 - Dean is under fire from Penne, who is throwing cloves at him in rage. He pulls one out of his eye, and it is red. It's still red when he wipes the blood off. He gives a whoop and gets his next clue.

Meanwhile, Dave & Boon-Mee (Good Mates) arrive at the House of Wonders (6th). Dave takes the challenge. "I let my Davey do this one," says Boon-Mee. "I just sit back and watch. I like to watch my Davey shoot. I can shoot too, but it a secret. Davey don't know I can shoot."

10:47 - Kay lights the wick and watches with glee as the cannonball arcs out into the harbour. It falls down, down, and smashes through a passing dhow. The small boat splinters apart. "Score one for the Zanzibarbarians!" says Kay. Glora - embarrassed as all heck - grabs him by the wrist and drags him away from the scene.
10:49 - Dave makes up time on the Roadblock and gets the cannonball into the harbour on the first shot, thanks to strong arms and keen accuracy. He and Boon-Mee take off for the pitstop at Arabs Fort.
Glora & Kay run through the streets of Stone Town. Dave & Boon-Mee stop to ask some locals. And...
10:04 - "Glora & Kay, you are team number five!"

Meanwhile, Dave is pulling Boon-Mee off a local lady. "You try to steal my Davey! You no smile at him, he mine. He love me and only me. Me the prettiest flower in Thailand, Davey not even want to look at poor people like you!"
"Calm down, mate, calm down," says Dave. "She was only giving us directions, she was. You don't have to get jealous when people be friendly."
"She a stealing whore, she is," says Boon-Mee, spitting on the ground.
The victim of Boon-Mee's onslaught runs away with scratch-marks down the side of her face, crying in horror.

10:08 - "Dave & Boon-Mee, you are team number six. Now, Boon-Mee, are you going to be nice to the locals from now on?"

11:27 - Dean & Penne (Romber Wannabe's) arrive at the House of Wonder. Dean takes the roadblock. On his first attempt, the cannon doesn't fire. On his second, the ball doesn't hit the harbour. Finally, on his third attempt he shoots his cannonball into the harbour. He and Penne take off for the pitstop.
11:58 - "Dean & Penne, you are the last team to arrive. I'm sorry to tell you that you have been eliminated from the race." They don't say anything, but Dean voices over that: "The reason we came on this race was to see is there is anything worse than death. I can now say for certain that there is: the barrage of emails that Braydon sends for this silly game is definitely worse than any way of dying you could imagine."

Dave and Boon-Mee
AHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHA

Braydon... I don't know for which reason you're gonna go to hell for: Boon-Mee's attitude or knowing how a lady boy acts like.

OH GAWD! HhahahahahahHAAHHAHAHA Ting Tong / Tong Ting is a classic.

BTW Bray, I scratched a scab off my leg and I'm letting the blood form into a decent mound and harden. Are you jalis?
