Chefchaouen is at the base of the Riff Mountains which is most famous for its cultivation of Marijuana. As I walked around the streets I was constantly asked if I would like to partake in the local delicacy. It started to get annoying. It appears that there is a market selling the stuff to tourists.
I walked to the Medina part of town and had breakfast in a small family run restaurant. The owner Mohamed was very friendly and continued to bring more than enough food than my stomach could fit in. He also offered to cook me a traditional Moroccan lunch at any time for the day or night.
I walked around the Medina and had a quick look at the Kasbah. Since I arrived in Morocco I have had songs like Rock the Kasbah and Funky Cold Medina in my head, I can't get rid of them no matter how hard I try. The IPod plays these songs from time to time just for my own amusement. A lot of the locals in this area are dressed in their local attire, called Jalabas. They look like Jedi's. I can see how George Lucas got his inspiration; he must have visited this part of the world.
During the mid afternoon I returned to see Mohamed and his traditional food, Gwynne and Martin joined me. It started with a Moroccan Salad followed by Lamb Tajine, which is a lamb stew served in an traditional earth ware bowl all served with plenty of fresh bread and a desert of fruit pastry.
On a sad note, during the day one of the girls in the group was robbed at knife point while walking alone back to the camp site. She had her video camera and photographic camera stolen. While walking around town I felt safe at all times I at no time did I fell unsafe, but I guess things can happen at any time to anybody.
