Now that I've looked around this town I have some more to add. I just happened to arrive on the craziest day of the week here - Thursday. Every Thursday evening they shut down the main street of downtown for a farmer's market. It's great. It's half tailgate party, half farmers' market, half county fair. The best part is you can pretty much eat for free if you don't push it. Just go around to the fruit stalls and ask for just a single apple and usually they'll just let you have it. If you ever get a chance to try a fresh Fuji apple don't turn it down because they are delicious. Another great part about this weekly party is the location of the stalls. They have the Democratic and Republican recruiting stalls directly across the street from each other, Atheists United directly across from the Pro-Life fanatics, and Planned Parenthood right beside the United Baptist Church. There are also your typical New Agey type stuff like psychics and jojoba oil stuff but there was also a stall where there was some weirdo anointing feet. I didn't ask how much it cost. There was also a stall for a group of people against Overpopulation. You might have noticed this in the news lately as the UN predicted we just hit 6 billion people lately. While I was in Santa Cruz there were a bunch of people parading up the street with placards demonstrating upon this same fact. I've done a little bit of research and found out that what has driven our sudden increase in population is not child-birth. In fact birthrates are down in every country in the world since last year and since the 1950's when there were 4 children per woman worldwide we've fallen to 2 children per woman. Our problem is that people aren't dying as fast as they used to (a problem always complained about at the Teachers' Pension Board). It's funny how all these people who are concerned about overpopulation haven't killed themselves to save us. Wouldn't that be nice? Logan's Run come to life! If one of these protesters ever tries to start a conversation with you ask them if they would consider killing themselves because that's the real problem.

San Luis Obispo is home to Cal Poly Tech University. Until tonight I didn't know it was a real farm school - even worse than Guelph. They actually have a Rodeo Team. No kidding, they had a stall at the market.

San Luis Obispo is also home to The Fremont a huge 1920's style Art Deco movie theatre. I was hoping to go see a movie is this monument to glitz but the movie showing was that new romantic crap with Harrison Ford.

Finally, this town also contains The Madonna Inn. This tacky place has a theme for every room. They actually sell postcards of every room. Apparently this is the motel that started that whole craze. I'm not staying there but I've found a nice little hostel where things are very cozy but at least I'm not sleeping in my car tonight.
