Loved – A night out in Malasana – even more so because the cab driver from the bus station into the city warned us about ``that side of the Gran Via``. There is a small stretch of Calle de la Palma that has a bar for anyone's tastes. We sampled several and ended up at drinking Estrella and snacking on tapas at the old school El Mano while we teased the bartender about their outdated stereo system (but not about their choice of music).
Hated – That due to the general strike we only had a single day to experience everything Madrid had to offer. If I, Brad, were a professor I would give Madrid an Incomplete (and it’s not the city’s fault).
Learned – Not to try to experience a city this big in a single day. We exhausted ourselves chasing a single transformative experience that simply wasn’t possible...although deciding to slow down and have a couple beers in the sun in Plaza Mayor might have come close – even if we only did it to be constantly near an available (and clean) bathroom...!
What the Guide Books got Right – See above... beers at the Plaza Mayor in the sun followed by Calle de la Palma at night. If you are in Madrid for just a day, stick to those two things and you’ll walk away with a huge grin on your face.
What the Guide books got wrong – That all the plazas sprinkled throughout the city are marvellous wondrous place to people watch. Most of them were empty – or was that because of the siesta?
One More Madrid Note - Never ever scare yourself into thinking you, with a severe case of traveller’s diarrhea, are about to sit on a bus with no bathroom for 5 hours. Never trust Brad when he says there’s no bathroom on that bus. There is. And you only find out after having visions of shitting all over your expensive “Walking Sandals”, squatting like some uncouth peasant behind the bus, on some random Spanish highway, with only warm Diet Coke to wash your feet off. Lord help you.
