Today our last day here...we see James Madison's house, Montpelier. The land originally belonged to his Grandfather. James Madison Sr. constructed Montpelier. James Madison went to Princeton in 1769-1772. Drafted the Bill of Rights. He married Dolley in 1794 and brought her to Montpelier and added on to the original house. James Madison was Jefferson's Secretary of State for eight years and then became our fourth President. While Madison was in the White House, the British burned the White House to the ground. Yes, Dolley saved the portrait of George Washington from the flames. The house was bought in 1901 by the duPonts and they added an additional 26,000 square feet to the houses original 11,000sq.ft. The house is in the process of being restored to when James and Dolley lived there in 1820s. READ about this amazing man!! He was brilliant!!
