The following day we made the 8 hour journey by bus from Huancayo to Ayacucho which took 8 hours. The only company that makes the trip is 'Molina'. They have one bus that leaves at 8am then 3 that make the trip through the night. If you make the trip as we did during the day the bus will take the high road over the Andes winding and traversing the mountains. All of the people on the bus were local Andean people, we were the only tourists. The road is dangerous and every year many people lose their lives travelling this road. The road is unsealed and there are no safety barriers to stop vehicles falling off the edge of the cliffs. The views are breathtaking and in parts the bus passes through the clouds and reaches heights where snow and ice can be seen at the sides of the road. It’s almost unbelievable at times as the bus stops in the absolute middle of nowhere to drop of a passenger; we’d just see some old guy being left with his 2 bags and a sack of onions or potatoes and no village or house or anything at all in sight, just mountains. As we reached Ayacucho we passed through the spectacular Huanta Canyon.
