As we made our way into Austria we gained a little history of this landlocked Central European country including its conquest by Charlemagne in 788 and the dynasty of the Hapsburgs (10th - 12th century) and later the Habsburgs, their involvement in WWI and occupation by Nazi Germany during WWII. That evening we stayed at the Austrian town of Tyrol. Austria is kind of like you'd expect if you haven't been there yet; green hills, more snow-capped mountains and the 'Sound of Music'. The one night stopover here served little more than to break up the journey from Venice to Prague. That afternoon I hired a bike and followed the river to the neighbouring town of Kirchdorf. This area of Austria is something of an adrenalin capital where you can try paragliding, skydiving, white-water rafting, canyoning, skiing, mountain biking or rock-climbing.
