We returned from Pai to Chiang Mai well over a week later, having earned ourselves an unexpected long-stay discount. What with the Reggae Festival imminent, organised by our friends at the Mojito House, we decided to hang around for it.

On the night of the festival, i almost didn't make it after bumping into an older Czech guy offering meditation sessions and travel information. I agreed to meet him in the evening at the Wat (temple). When it transpired that i was the only attendant and that it was actually at his house, i wandered where the catch was... but there was none. He was a long term expat geologist, fluent in 8 languages (including Lao and Thai) offering translation, meditation and tourist information for a nominal charge. Interesting meditation sessions aside, we talked for a long time afterwards and he truly was a mine of useful information for travel in SE Asia. If there is time during this trip, he has a 3300km moped route through northern Thailand annotated with sights, stops, gas stations, mechanics and all manner of other information that would be interesting to do.

And I did make the festival afterwards - and it was good fun - perhaps 1000 people attended the event, situated by a lake outside town. A pleasantly drunken ticket purchase from the organiser meant i got my 300B change and 200B entrance ticket without the 500B note i was paying with ever being taken off me :-)

Now it definitely is time to leave Thailand. To the border we go...
