This is one impressive and huge project. You may not be aware, but this project has been going on for over 50 years. The original sculptor passed away, but many of his 10 children and wife are still going strong. This when completed will be the largest statue in the world. Mount Rushmore would fit into the area of just the head of Crazy Horse. The pictures included are not the best as the weather started to turn and fog rolled in. I must say this was probably the worse weather we have had for the whole trip. Besides the memorial there is a very nice museum following the work on the statue and a number of Indian artifacts.

While there we had dinner at the restaurant on site. It was very good. Bill had a stew with Bison beef along with a fried bread and it was excellent.

From there we decided to try the lighting at Mount Rushmore as the lighting at Crazy Horse was cancelled due to the fog. Although the ceremony went on as scheduled you could not see the presidents.  We already planned on coming back tomorrow to get some morning pictures. We hope we have better luck tomorrow.

Got into the hotel (Best Western) and the wheels went off a bit. We did not check in until after 10pm and when we got there the elevator was out of order, our room was on the third floor, and we were as far away from the stairs as possible. Did not make for a happy family. Will be trying to get the rate reduced for our inconvenience tomorrow.  More on that later.

Peg's Additions:

All I can say is Korczak Ziolkowski (the sculptor) and his wife were a little nuts.  They built their own house/studio up on the mountain and had 10 kids!  I still can't get past that.  I was pleasantly surprised at the dinner on site.  I had salmon, wild rice and corn.  Everything was very tasty!  Bill's right that we were not happy about the elevator situation at the hotel.  I felt very sorry for an elderly couple.  They had to stop and sit down and rest on the second floor before tackling the next set of stairs.  We got our exercise that night!
