As I mentioned in the last entry because we got on the road earlier we made it to the Badlands area sooner than expected and were able to move it up to visit today. The weather was iffy as it was spitting rain now and then and the wind started to pick up, but we gave it a try.

The place is simply indescribable. You must make this one of your visits sometime in your life. We only took the 39 mile loop and stopped at overlooks and some walks to ledge, but it was amazing. If we had more time and had been prepared there are some great opportunities to hike.

As you look through the pictures (they don't do it justice) I tried to pick some of the ones that would give you an idea. I included some unedited panoramas, but if you can zoom in on them you will really see the diversity of the formations.

It got cooler as storms moved in, but it was only near the end that the rain really started. We may stop back tomorrow morning while waiting to visit the Minuteman Missile Historical site. (More on that tomorrow.

By about 5:30 (keep in mind we gained another hour and are now on MDT (mountain time) we were ready to head to the hotel.

More on that in the next entry.

Peg's Additions:

I'm always in awe of the badlands to see the power of nature.  You do feel like you are on the moon or some strange planet.  Even more fascinating is picturing the settlers that tried to live there.  I could also see the Native American Indians luring the buffalo off the cliffs and waiting at the bottom to shoot them with their bow and arrow.  Remembering the second grade unit we taught many years ago...

Of course today was the first day I wore sandals.  I've worn my sneakers the entire trip but thought I would do the sandals since we wouldn't be doing as much walking.  I did fine on the paths we took but would have liked to have done more.  Of course that's probably why it rained also.  My sandals are now drying at the hotel.
