It was another bus ride from Jinghong to Kunming.  Although the buses are fine, I think they should find better lunch stops and toilet stops!!!!!! Check out the photos.  I totally enjoyed Kunming.  Many see it as just another city but I found that it has a good variety of things to do and the surrounding area is also great.   Being close to the University I definitely see this place as a University City.  I stayed at the Youth Hostel near the University which was not great (Again dirty carpets, walls!!!)  and I was paying 110 Yuen which was expensive. I am told that the Hump Hostel is better and also a better price.  I found this great restaurant and great food and of course there is Salvadore's with great coffee.

The Green Lake Park is very nice and always lots of activity going on.  Different groups doing different type of exercices, dances . . .   school children playing and exercising . . .  and beautiful music.  There are also many interesting places, monuments within Kunming - The Tang Dynasty Pagodas, temples. I quite enjoyed the "city" feel as I hadn't really seen any major shopping, restaurants . . . for  quite awhile!!!

I spent a day at the Yunnan Nationalities Museum. It represents 25 different minority groups and is set up into small minority villages with scheduled dances . . .

Another day was spent going to the Bamboo Temple near Kunming.  The adventure to the temple was just as great as the temple itself.  I am not quite sure how I got there but it was through small paths in the country side. With stops here and there to ask locals how to get to the Temple. Not really able to communicate I still did find it and it was worth every effort. One cannot really describe the scenery along the way, the narrow paths along the way, the noises coming through the forest and hills and being alone and not really knowing where I was going to end up. All of this really makes for a great day and adventure.

Another wonderful adventure in Kunming was meeting a great couple (Mike from Canada  but living in Kunming with his wife Jenny who is Chinese).  They invited me to share dinner with them at this great restaurant just a few doors from Salvador's.  Mike who is a certified pilot and instructor for Paragliding had just bought a 4X4 and him and Jenny were going to go out and check some sites out for paragliding. He asked if I was interested in going along. What an opportunity. Again, there were amazing landscapes, a wonderful clean fresh water lake and of course great company. (If any of you are interested in paraglyding in Kunming, China you might want to e-mail Mike at mike4g_air@yahoo.ca  )
