Leaving Canaan Valley and its' luxuriant surroundings was difficult to say the least.
Chris fell deathly sick on the elevator ride from dinner to our room and had an extremely tough night. The morning found her weak, but willing to soldier on. (what else would you expect from her?)
For the first time in quite some time we had to face a stiff headwind. That was really unfortunate as the highway 93 could have been negotiated with speed and ease. Instead, road construction with their attendant rock hauling trucks and coal hauling trucks also made for a stressful and dangerous day.
Davis was busy having a celebration and the Blackwater Bike Shop provided us with an opportunity to purchase some badly needed new bikewear.
Roads returned to being sketchy again. We took a side road to avoid the main flow of traffic. It turned out well, but on one of the screamin' downhills Chris had a major bolt on her shifter work itself out and where it fell we had no idea. I backtracked for quite a distance, but it was worse than a needle in a haystack. At least the haystack is in a fixed location. Small bungees, a limited supply of duct tape and we were able to get her on her way, with several less gears.
Late afternoon found us in a small town where we hunted for a way to fix the shifting problem. A couple of grease monkeys in their own garage were pressed into service and they came through for us. Thanks guys!
We had purposely headed to highway 50 because we needed an interstate with a wide shoulder in order to make better, safer time. Huge disappointment. Highway 50 turned out to be a non-interstate in this area. In fact it turned out to have no shoulder at all. We were left with wrenching guts again.
We chose to take the 5 mile, 9+ % grade to Claysville to finish the day. Screamin' fast!
The Methodist Church grounds provided us a place to spend the night. It turned out to be an unsettled night as I was awakened with the clear knowledge that we must change routes again.
To continue on this route would just be too dangerous.
