The town of Arcata, in Humboldt County rests a mere 8 hour bus drive from San Francisco. On this trip you can expect to see rivers, logs, and many interesting birds of prey, such as kestrels, kites and hawks. You can also expect to over hear some interesting conversations, generally involving to procurement of marijuana for further transport to various locations along the Pacific coast of the US. Arcata California is a strange mix of wealthy ex-bay area yuppies, California country hicks, college students, wandering drug addicts, and all varieties of flavors existing in between. I quickly left Arcata after arriving and worked my way another 15 miles north to Trinidad, a coastal town with beautiful ocean views and granite rock protrusions in a myriad of shapes and locations, from the expansive beaches to off shore bird dumping grounds. Our stay is in the loft of Emily Morris's parent house, a custom built wood house, nestled amoung an acre of redwoods, about 5 minutes form the coast. The location of Trinidad allows for many outdoor activities, such as walking in the redwood forest amoung the tallest trees on earth, walking on the beaches, checking out the creeks/rivers, walking with the doggies and horse, and of course searching for unique species of mushrooms. The duration of my trip in Trinidad was about 8 days, in which I was able to get to know Emily's parents much better, and prepare for my thesis defence and submission. This is my number one goal at the moment, attempt to finish my degree on the schedule I have planned, and head off to the southern hemisphere to start the official part of our trip, together.... stay tuned
