Happy new yearxxx
We are in Sandakan - Borneo, we saw orang-utans today one with a baby. We climbed Mt Kinabulu ... 9hrs to reach the summit over 4000m above sea level. What a way to start the new year, it was so freezzzing at the top but an amazing view. But we had to come down again, which was hard on the knees! Jenny got altitude sickness half way up and the guide had to hold her hand. How embarrassing! As is this photo... On the way up Trish dropped her sunglasses down a squat toilet and had to fish them out with her walking stick.
We saw a pitcher plant on the way down. None of us can walk today but we're off on a river safari tomorrow - hopefully we'll see a proboscis monkey and some asian rhinos.
We spent the first few days snorkling on our own little island - Manukan off Kota Kinabalu - Trish and Jenny had to share a tent but Jenny didn't snore. Apparently Trish does. Amazing snorkling and drinking pina coladas to top it off. All 5 of us are getting along pretty well. Everyone thinks that Glenn has 4 wives.
Some of the places we've stayed are a bit dodgy - bed bugs came out of the walls to eat us at night.
Today we caught a taxi (texsi in Malay) and it was like the venga bus - big subwoofers in the back and leopard print seat covers. The driver wants to find a girlfriend, so we're taking him clubbing tonight in Sandakan. The markets have some pretty wierd food. Trish tried to dare Jenny to eat some seaweed and dried fish. Everyone stares at us and says "Helllloooooo". Today someone told us he loved us as we walked past.
Hopefully we don't get attacked by leeches. Apparently they grow up to 30cm long. We are getting prepared with leech proof sock and cigarettes to burn them off, then vodka to numb the pain.
