Trip End
Aug 21, 2009
Well, I can't believe it is the end already. Last night we pitched the tent for the last time on this summer voyage. After waking up outside St. Louis yesterday, we checked out the ancient Native American site of Cahokia Mounds. This site was the largest city in North America, even larger than London, England in the 1200’s. Seventy out of the original 120 earthen mounds are still located here, and the largest, Monk’s Mound, was longer than the Egyptian pyramids and higher than the Mexican step pyramids. Drove through Illinois and Indiana and on to Dayton, Ohio for the night. We should be back home in State College by dinnertime tonight. In 43 days we have traveled over 9000 miles through 19 states. We have slept in 11 different cabins, 8 tent sites, 6 hotels, one family home, and one tepee. We have seen license plates from almost every state in the country. We have taken over 4000 photographs and almost 9 hours of videotape. Aside from an occasional bump, bruise, blister, or foot-stepped-on-by-a-horse, none of us have gotten sick or had any major health problems. Hopefully the kids will remember the good times, and forget the boring times. And hopefully all the sites we visited will still be around when they take their own children to visit.
