We said bye bye to Nice and headed north along the French Riviera to Italy. The views along the way were breathtaking. Our first real stop of the day, besides ones to take pictures, was Monaco. Though tiny it was beautiful and with more massive yachts per square inch than we've ever seen. We saw the palace and the casino from afar before we had to put in the 400 km to Lucca for tonight's stop.

The road to Italy  from Nice was long and the 100 plus tunnels and windy roads made for a challenging drive. Kudos to Sue for getting us to Lucca in 1 piece!!

On the way to Lucca we made a stop in Pisa to shore up their leaning tower. Sarah managed to kick a concrete step and take the top off her little toe. Luckily a guard at the tower was able to request first aid for her and she now has a large bandage on her right baby toe.

By chance we happened to have chosen to stay in Lucca on the evening of a religious celebration. There is a long procession lasting 3 hours with costumes, crosses, bands, candles on large sticks....the usual religious festival in Italy kind of things. Though spectacular it meant we could not park near our hostel and had to drag our bags across a busy road and into the walled city of Lucca.

The big deal today is that it is Mary's birthday. Most of it was spent in the car but hey, she is on vacation in a foreign country. Not so bad! 39 again this year. The pizza for dinner was great and the desert with candle seemed to do the trick for a birthday cake.

And for the finale of the evening fireworks!!  We had a great view from Mary and Sue's room.  They sure know how to celebrate here in Lucca.
