Well I left Utila, a week late never-the-less, but at least I actually made it back to the mainland (some still haven't been found after they left Water Caye after SunJam!!) Over three weeks on a Carribean island really is a tonic for the body and the soul, I have never enjoyed doing NOTHING every day so much!!

Since I last spoke we had the culmination of "the magical island of Utila" carnival - after a week of street parties, there was a big street parade. We even made a float for it with the turtle conservation guys, our papier mache monstrosity was no match for the competition though. The Utilan idea of a float is to fit as many speakers with the biggest sound system you can onto the back of one (or two) pickup trucks, stick a few scantily clad local ladies and home boys on for decor, then fire sweets, toiletries and all manner of other shit at full belt into the crowd - was all rather amusing - until I got hit in the face with a shampoo bottle!

Also got my Advanced PADI Scuba diving cert, had some amazing dives to wrecks and some of the best sites on the island. Also did some eerie night dives and some underwater photography. Best dive I did was my advanced "Deep" dive to 35m, we were swimming over this bit of coral at about 4 or 5m, the seabed then dropped away, to nothing. We swam straight down this huge wall for over a 100ft, got really narked out of our brains (nitrogen narcosis caused by nitrogen build-up when you go deep; feckin' hilarious, with no side effects) even our instructor was laughing her tits off underwater, the fact we could hear each other pissing ourselves made it even worse. Then a turtle cruised by which was the icing on the cake.

Mmmmm, then what else was there..... oh aye, that small party.... what was it .... SUNJAM!! Those of you who looked at the website will have probably been a little jealous they couldn't make that flight in time. In reality, trust me, it was infinitely better! We missed the main party boat (actually a rusty cargo vessel), got a clapped out old fishing boat that nearly capsised the whole way there as it was so overloaded, then landed on the most tranquil and prettiest of tiniest islands, "Water Caye",

to the most untranquil madness and hedonisism I've seen since... eeehm ... Edinburgh.... (you guys know what I mean!) Partied and danced the night away with my gallon drum of rum punch, sat round campfires telling stupid stories then spent the entire next day drinking Rum Daquiris in 2ft of pristine calm Carribean ocean - the only hangover cure I can tell you that actually works!

Oh yeah, I also did some more turtle conservation, that was what I was there for, wasn't it? Slept many nights on deserted beaches watching shooting stars and blethering nonsense, alas never seen another turtle on land after that first night, many in the sea however. I think we definitely helped out the conservation guys on the island though, I feel good about my time there anyway!

So thats me been away 3 MONTHS TODAY!! EAAK! Seems like an eternity since I left Scotland, god knows what it'll be like by the time I get to NZ! Feeling a tinge of homesickness but I'll get over it. Just arrived yesterday at my next volunteer placement. It's this enormous botanical garden on the north coast, actually the 2nd biggest one in the world. Huge trees and mad plants from all over the world, towering bamboo plants, fruit trees, exotic birds and butterflies everywhere.

Have spent last two days climbing trees for exotic fruit I've never even heard of, weeding, reading, sweating my bollocks off and scratching the shit out of all ma mossie bites!

Ciao por ahora mis amigos!
