In order to authenticate all of our visa documents for our life as UAE expats, Chad and I decided to take a leisurely drive up to Washington D.C. the week after Bonnaroo to hand-deliver the goods right to the US Department of State.

The hostel we stayed at while in DC was ubercheap at $20 a night! Free PB&J 24/7, and a chance to meet other travelers from all over the world! However, the location was less than ideal: lots of garbage and boarded up windows. The restaurant next to the hostel had a sign in the window advertising "coffee, pizza, and notaries."  Perhaps for that on-the-go girl who needs need an espresso pronto while legalizing important documents?!? Other mentionable sites on the block included a man walking his dog--and the pooch donned a Louis Vuitton gun holster. Greeeeat.

Reminiscent of our Memphis misadventure, Chad and I stuck out like a pair of big dirty hippies. Clad in flip flops and long hair, we drank water on the train (an older woman sternly chided us for this), and *gasp* smiled at people as we went about our business. We looked so out of place, that when we went to the Department of State, the receptionist looked us over and in a bemused tone asked, "Are you two together?"  Since we were in separate lines, I was surprised by her comment. "Yeah, why?" I asked. She looked at both of us, and smugly remarked, "Well, it's OBVIOUS."

In short, the DC scene is not for us laid-back Wisconsinites-- business
people dressed up in suits hurry around with cross and weathered faces. More
than once, people groaned and vocalized their frustrations at us if we
took too long to board the metro or blocked the escalator for those
who fancied jogging up it. Even if it wasn't our favorite city, we did see a few sites and get a free bus tour. :)

We came, we saw, we conquered. Chad and I fulfilled our mission to submit all our visa paperwork, and hopefully we spread some good 'Sconny love while we were there.
