The morning of the 8th I saw that my rear tire was getting badly worn from highway miles and heavy luggage - 'squared off' as they say, a flat strip doen the middle, which ruins your handling, and the tread was almost gone.  I found a bike shop in Casper that had a tire for me, which is ideal because that's the way I was heading.  So after a breakfast in Interior of pancakes from 100 year old starter dough (which were good), and hosing down the bike in Rapid City, I set off.

I rode through the Thunder Basin National Grassland in eastern Wyoming - over 100 miles of flat, arid grassland, which was pretty amazing.  Went by a huge coal mine, with railroad cars lined up.  This was the real west, whereas Surgis and Rapid City were really a western theme park - gemstone shops, reptile museums various caves and wonders avaiable to the paying RV'er.  In Wyoming it was about coal, cattle, even oil.

Casper is not a bad little town.  I'm taking a day off here to catch up, before heading to Yellowstone tomorrow.  It's very conservative - there's a hot item in the paper where one Republican candidate for the House (their only seat) accused the other of being associated with the Sierra Club, which of course would be the kiss of death.
