Had a great breakfast and say bye bye to the family in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn!!  Saw the Verrazano Bridge for one last time for the next two (or possibly three) months!  It was a gorgeous sight as always and the weather was incredible!!!  Thankfully the traffic cooperated and we got out of Staten Island quickly -- rare but it happened!!  New Jersey was the battlefield -- us against the construction crews.  But we made it out and the payoff was drving through Pennsylvania and seeing the gorgeous fall foliage -- see for yourself!  Leaving Pennsylvania and going into Ohio was a shock -- where did all the gorgeous trees go??!!  Totally flat.  Nothing to see.  The rest stops were really nice though -- they have that going for them!  One rest stop freaked me out though -- there was a 60 year old woman in the bathroom who was just lurking!  She was done and just stood against the wall and was waiting for me to go -- very strange!  Did she have some kind of fetish??  I didn't want to ask, but that's what I suspect!

Got out of Ohio and drove into Indiana.  Very strange smelling state.  We saw our lives flash before our eyes when a major thunderstom came through and the driver side wiper stopped working!  Well, you know what they say about men stopping to ask for directions -- he wouldn't pull over until it was safe to drive -- just kept driving and peering through the raindrops!  I aged about 5 years that night but he considers himself a hero getting us through it alive.  Pull over next time!!!  We finally landed in South Bend -- word to the wise, don't order chips and salsa -- us New Yorkers are spoiled!  We checked into an American Best Value Hotel -- not bad for 45 bucks (AAA membership pays off again) where we were comatose even before our heads hit the pillow!  It was a  long day but so far, totally worth it!!
