Covered 640 miles today from Bloomington to Abilene. Same mileage we traveled the first 2 days total. Arrived in Abilene 7:30 EDT (6:30 CDT). Had an impromptu hour and a half the tour it Western Illinois. About 20 miles from the Mississippi River Kathy realized we were close to Alton Illinois where her maternal great grandparents were married in 1870. Got off 70 and headed to Alton. Kathy spotted Mary's Catholic Church up on a hill where James Kelly and Catherine Doyle were married. Took a number of. photos outside the church and a couple inside during Mass. Crossed over the Mississippi at the Alton bridge and shortly thereafter crossed Missouri River the first of three times. The Missouri countryside was more picturesque then we thought it would be. In Abilene there were three interesting local restaurants, however two had closed in the afternoon and one was closing in a half an hour. So we had a gourmet meal at Pizza Hut. After dinner we visited the Eisenhower birth place and library. With his boyhood home, library, museum, visitor centet and chapel where he is buried, was much more extensive then we had thought. As it was getting dark we were the only ones there. We walked around and took pictures. Tomorrow morning when there is sunlight we will visit the rest of downtown Abilene. The town was at the end of the Chisholm Trail and between 1867 and 1872 a million cattle were driven up from Texas, loaded onto railroad cars and shipped east. After 1872 Junction City, 30 miles east of here, became the preferred railroad terminus and ended Abilene's glory days.
