Next stop a slightly odd detour to Guatemala in central America. Originally we had arranged to meet the team from Wildhearts (one of the social enterprises Bob works with back in the UK) in Ecuador to visit some of their micro finance clients. That fell through though, apparently it was considered a little dangerous to travel to certain parts of Ecuador, and instead they suggested Guatemala. We are so glad they did.

We were always going to have to fly via central America in order to cross from Ecuador back into Brazil in any case, and wanted the chance to get a taste for an already forming plan to take a few weeks journey from Mexico down through to Colombia at some point in the future. What we found there was spectacular and so interesting.

Mick and Carys from Wildhearts met us at the airport, along with Costanza from FINCA, who administer the micro loans on the ground. A larger than life, former heavy metal singer turned serial entrepreneur from Glasgow, Mick is quite a character-  inspiring and full of fun. Carys, another Scot is just lovely, the perfect foil to Mick and the person that keeps the show on the road. Costanza is the UK FINCA rep and a fun, super smart Italian. We were later to be joined by Josh, the local Guatemalan contact and designated interpreter completing our motley crew.
Our first night was spent in stunningly beautiful Antigua, where we were treated to dinner in a five star hotel (wow) and chatted away over gorgeous local rum called Zacapa (someone at home find this stuff, yum).  But the real journey was to begin the next day in Panajachel.
