In the interests of whale watching we took a ferry to the picturesque San Juan Island today. To our amusement, on the trip over there were numerous announcements for people to turn off their motion sensitive car alarms - they kept going off.

We have booked a whale watching tour for tomorrow. Late in the afternoon we drove around the island and amongst other things spotted some more wildlife: some Black Tailed Deer and a Harbor Seal sunning itself on a rock.

Next Day

You can see we had a successful whale watching trip. Two Orcas swam right by our boat. And even without the orcas it was a glorious day. The weather was perfect and the trip was well worth it for the scenery alone. We have subsequently received an e-mail from the cruise company with the ID number of one of the whales we saw. They were "Transient Whales" evidently, so they weren't familiar with them, but they were able to send photos off to a central database service for identification. These orcas will only eat marine mammals. There are others that will eat only fish. The orcas they train in aquariums are always the fish eating sort. Note that there is no biological difference between the two groups, they just choose to eat different food.

We took some shots of Bald Eagles. They can be readily identified by their white (but not bald) heads (we know now).

(Up until now all the photos have been as they came off the camera. I have cropped quite a few of today's photos).
