Brenda here.We are held up in a very spacious room in Arequipa. This city has a more European flare to it.Still the crazy driving though lol.It is raining. The temperature here is cooler .Hum mm  around 13 degrees C.Now the bus ride here from Huacachina was not so fun for me.It was long ,(over 21 hours) We were held up on a roadside for 7 hours as the river we had to cross was too deep and fast to cross,The roads were windy and on the side of high mountains ,need I say more ! lol.

So we have now spent 3 nights and two full days in Arequipa, and it has a totally different vibe than Lima. We all like  it better, the people here are very warm, affectionate and helpful, you really feel welcome in this city, even though it is a large busy city. Pedestrians still have no rights, however we are getting better at playing chicken with the drivers. We are all adjusting to the  altitude 7600' (which also makes it cooler), the first day it was tiring to take walk to the park, now we are able to walk further without feeling tired. Brenda, Michelle and myself were sick for the last couple of days, but are now recovered, standard traveler stuff, LOL. (Dave)

The first night in Arequipa we stayed a really quaint hostel called "Casa Blanca Your Peru", the building is about 250  years old, and is made from the traditional white volcanic rock used most often in Arequipa. The staff were awesome, we could only stay one night here because they were busy and they helped us find similar type accommodations. We really needed to recover before going to the Colca Canyon. The last two nights we stayed at another nice Hotel/Hostel Tierra Mistica.

The last two days we mostly walked around, did a bit of shopping, tried some local food. Unfortunately it has rained quite a bit, and the cloud cover has prevented us from seeing the snow covered mountains except the first morning.

Today we are finally going to Colca Canyon !!! We might even run into some snow on the way, as we will climb to around 16000' before dropping back down to the canyon, so we are all drinking cocoa tea, and have some cocoa candy as well, which apparently helps prevent altitude sickness, we will find out soon enoiugh.

Hi Brenda,
Glad you're having fun. No news here. Charge nurse job not yet awarded. Weather is slightly warmer. Dr. B. macaulay broke his leg skiing . Bus drivers still on strike .

So it's the Burgess family that is the common denominator in 2 very long bus rides. 15.5 hrs from Montreal to Halifax in Feb 2011 with the Fergusons. 21 hrs in Peru last week. You guys might want to rethink this bus thing!

Susan, Brenda was rethinking the bus thing, and we are taking a flight down to Santiago in a few days, the rest of the bus trips are more reasonable. Just going to chill in Arica, Chile for a few days. Stayin at a party hostel , bit of fun !!! LOL
