Tracy and I are still in Flores, Guatemala, an island in Lake Peten Itza, and are on our second week of Spanish school with Dos Mundos here on the island. The location of the school is perfect because it is literally a 30 second walk from our "habitacion", which is a small studio apartment we got for two weeks, and found with the help of a local. It costs us about $6.25 a night.

Dos Mundos is a language school run a crazy German guy named Dieter. We use the term "crazy" very loosely because Dietter is a really cool guy and has a great sense of humor. He's got a great laugh and you can tell alot about a person by the way they laugh. He's been coming to Guatemala since university in the eighties. Since then he's been involved in creating tour companies, a language school, and has been involved in several very successful archaeological digs at some of the Mayan ruins in the area. His teachers at the language school we are attending are extremely nice. Our ability to learn Spanish as easily as we thought is not so nice. Its been tough to say the least, but we have both made vast improvements in our ability to communicate with the locals. We highly recommend his school Dos Mundos. And his cafe.

Last Saturday we went to visit the ruins of Tikal, which are said to be some of the most impressive of the entire Mayan culture in meso-america. It was truly one of the most impressive places I've ever been. Words really cant describe the scope of it. Some of the more impressive ruins have only been excavated as late as the early 1990's. It was an extremely amazing day and its hard to really comprehend exactly what it must have been like for the Mayans back then. Especially since alot of their culture is still a mystery. After that I got pretty ill from drinking water all day from my improperly stored (moldy) Camelback. Luckily it only lasted about 24 hours, but it ruined my weekend. I spent it almost entirely in the apartment.

Other than that we primarily stay on the island of Flores. School takes up most of the day, and we spend the rest either swimming in the lake, looking for restaurants to try, exploring San Miguel which is the peninsula just north of us, or running errands in Santa Elena which is the main puebla on the mainland on the edge of the lake. We discovered that this where thrift store finds in the U.S. come to die. The stores get clothes from America by the pallets, literally. Tracy has been having a field day checking out all the stores and bought an entire weekends worth of clothing for $5US.

We've also meet a bunch of cool people here. Its hard to decide where to start, but Carlos, who owns the restaurant Las Puertas is on the top of my list. He's a truly interesting/crazy guy who is a lot of fun to hang out with.
We also meet Cameron, A very chill Aussie we had classes and visited a local wildlife refuge with. Then there's Nate and Dave from Kansas City that are two lifelong friends that were alot of fun to hang out with. And how could I forget Chapo and his wife Ginette who own Cafe Chilero (Cool Beans). We go there everyday for coffee, smoothies, beers, snacks, internet, etc. I'm actually writing this in their place now, and we're borrowing their canoe tomorrow for a paddle around the lake.

They are all gone now, and we are ready to move on too. Its been great here, but we're starting to get itchy feet again. I'm actually looking forward to packing my backpack. But then again, I always am.

great cultural experiences
Hey Tracy and Eric,
Looks like you guys are really getting a good dose of the culture in that area. It's so cool!!! Thanks for sharing. Have fun on the next leg of your adventure. I'll be living vicariously through you both. (Beats worring about the housing and job markets here at home.)
Love, Patricia
