Just over a week here in Delhi--actually saw some sights, Lalkila, or red fort, conneaught place, the inside of a few pubs and dhabas. It is good to adjust in a place where the living is easy, but the days pass quickly and I must be on my way.
I am leaving to go up north to Manali in about an hour by sleeper bus, though as bumpy as the ride is, they should call it the sleepless bus.
The plan is to reunite with my friend Dayalu for a few days, then take Rocinante down from the mountain on a cold ride back to the chaos of Paharganj, where my old trusty steed will get a checkup, perhaps new timing gears and rocker arms.
After last time, I thought it would be difficult to find a decent mechanic here, one who would do the job right for once and all. But wandering down one of the side streets, I came across a couple of beautiful old WW2 enfield 2-strokes, and another italian make I cannot for the life of me remember. Looking in the window there was a rusty BSA and more Enfields. Of course I couldn't resist the urge to go in and see. Turns out I had stumbled upon the headquarters of the Bullet Wallas, a loose organization of Enfield riders in india, and also around the world. They had tank bags! Proper helmets! New parts! And the holy grail: The Eicher atlas of India with city maps in the back. I nabbed one of those right away. Even though there were a bunch of them behind the desk, I just had a feeling as if I had closed my eyes for a second they would disappear like some sort of Mirage. I was scolded to take off my shoes before coming upstairs by a big man named Balu, and his not-so-big girlfriend Laura. Turns out the Wallas are the brainchild of these two, and they provide a network and support system for riders just like me.
"So, what does it take to be a Bullet Walla?" I asked. Balu answered "Do you own an Enfield?" I told him two--Rocinante here in India, and my beautiful '65 back in boston. Just a slight rise of the man's eyebrow told me that this would be just fine. Turns out that Balu is a '65 baby as well, my same age, and also from the States. He is doing a business merchandising Wallas gear, and buying, refurbishing, and selling Royal Enfields, sometimes even exporting them. All in all they looked pretty organized with it, as organized as one could be with Indians helping you. Nice folks, and though I fell asleep early and did not take them up on their invitation to have a couple of beers in the eve, I returned today to buy a t-shirt and get more info. Turns out they have an affiliate guesthouse just down from Manali, and a ranch in Udaipur where it might be possible to store my bike when I go back home. Just the kind of people I have been wanting to meet!
So I have decided to return here (though Delhi is about used up for me just now), and let them do the work. Also they can do custom painting and decals. I would like to make a logo for Rocinante to give her a bit more character than just a straight black. Perhaps a tank design of that famous Miro of Don Quixote. . .

You can stay in a place for only so long before you know it is time to leave. Taking my experience from Arumbol and other places, my cue came up, so I'm checking out of the Hare Rama (BTW--the man at the counter is a CHEAT--DO NOT STAY HERE!!!), and on to the bus to the mountains. Cold as it may be up there, it still is nothing I am not used to, Boston has worse weather from november to April. Still and all it will probably be a rather chilly ride down at least to Mandi, where the foothills fade and the warmer air is allowed to hang around.
Still I have had fun here, hanging around with a couple of gentlemen who live in Germany, one German, one English, and pondering the mysteries of the mighty "Shpreu-wurst," smoking coffee and drinking cigarettes. There's an english chap wandering the streets here with a chip on his shoulder, and I'm off before he sneaks up behind me and gives me a pipe to the head. Every now and then you run into one of these characters, and it is best to give them a wide berth if you can help it.

In Mumbai Harbor, I am told, some numbnuts skipper of a tanker weighed anchor on the huge telephone cable, snagged it, and snapped it in half. They are working on the problem, but the downside is that internet in the whole of India is running slow, and sometimes not at all. I've been remiss in my updates for this reason, and also I cannot upload any pictures. Shame, though, I have some choice shots I'd like to share. Bear with me, and I will put them up as soon as I get somewhere that can handle the data.

I can't wait to get out of this town. Stay tuned for the return to Manali, and stick around for the deserts of Rajastan. Should be a good ride.

THE NEW KIWI OWNERS SUCK WE LOVED OUR AMERICAN BALU
I broke down in Delhi on my KTM and went to a KIWI owned shop called Bulletwallas .The owner named Chris said they can fix my bike and while I wait for 1.5 weeks on parts and labour i bought a bike and had plans on shipping it home.WORST MISTAKE OF MY LIFE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
came back to a motor that had been thrashed. people at the chi shops said they seen my bike being ran around day and night by the wrench's.
I had to fight with this %$#@"to get my old bike parts ( which he said he did have ) and take it to a guy in karol bagh named Rajesh who took another 2 weeks to compleat the job unfortinalty the job from Bulletwallas had thrashed the bike so bad i shiped it back home.............
now the Royal Enfield i purchesed from Bulletwallas left me high and dry after 1 week and a 200$ rebuild on an engine that was suposed to be new.damb sure wasnt.
make a long stoy short .im flying back home to work toward a new bike .
just warning about the So called great shop of Chris the Bulletwallas.

Absolutely! I love how they talk down Balu indirectly on the "new" Bullet Wallas website.
Incidentally, I hear Balu is up in Manali now, he apparently had some health problems or something so I heard from the shopkeeper across the street. I might look him up this year.

If you would like to get a bullet shipped or built for India, call or e-mail Soni Motors. www.sonimotors.com I have dealt with them for an engine, and though they were fairly slow in shipping it out, it got here and is good. Also I have seen some of the custom bikes they do and they do great work. The old man was an army mechanic in the day. Go find them in the Karol Bagh, and tell them "Mr. Josh" sent ya!

First as the new owners of BW we have never operated out of the old shop by the Imperial Cinema, never had access to that place as Balu created a big hassle with the landlord when we were to take it over.
Second we have never worked on any KTM, never sat on one, have no idea about them. Our only office and workshop is near Arakashan Rd. We have never worked on anything other than Bullets.
Third, Balu did not shift to Manali, he double sold bikes to customers overseas with no papers, there are police enquiries our for him and other issues outstanding here. Yes we disassociated ourselves from him as we had to spend so much time sorting out the complaints from his customers when we took over the business.

Oh and also when Balu's customers come and assault me for being ripped off by Balu, what should one do.
There was much about Balu and his dealings that few realise. An interesting character but lets leave it there shall we.
