It was a short coach ride to Cairns, our final destination of our 5 week stay in Australia. Again, we had only managed to leave ourselves with 3 day here! So our plans to use Cairns as our base to explore Cape Tribulation and Port Douglas backfired. And apart from this, there was only one thing that we had to see before we could leave Australia. Crocs and koalas!

We didn't have a hostel booking when we arrived in Cairns, but a couple of girls from our Whitsundays trip had recommended a place where they had stayed, and said it was amazing. So we grabbed a map from the Information Centre, and walked the 15 minutes to the hostel. We thought that as it was our last 3 days in Australia, we would give their 6 bed dorms a miss (any excuse!) and check into a private room. However, we didn't bank on how expensive their private rooms were going to be!! So we compromised, sort of, and booked up one night in a dorm, and then booked into our own room after that. Lets just say not a single one of our motel rooms cost as much as this place! We couldn't get our heads around it, it's a hostel, not a hotel! Although it did look nice, and turns out our room had its own small kitchen which is always a bonus. The hostel also had a pool and a large outdoor seating area.

We spent our time in Cairns walking round the city buying a couple of last minute souvenirs, and relaxing by their man-made lagoon. We also booked up a trip to a place called Hertley's croc farm, as this turned out to be the best place for us to see koalas and funnily enough, crocs! We booked through a company that would pick us up from the hostel and also drop us back. We decided that as it would be our last day, and for us to get the most out of the day, we would be picked up early at their set time of 0820.

0900 the next day, and we were still waiting outside the hostel. Have they forgotten about us?! Yes, turned out they had. Not even really forgotten about us, but denied having ever had our booking. Despite the lady from the tour agency having spoken to them 2 days earlier, and us already paying! They said they would collect us instead at 1030, which we really weren't happy about! We were missing most of the morning at the farm as it was a 40 minute drive away, and felt like it was a waste of money to go now. We were in quite a bad mood at this point, especially when Chris rang the tour company to complain and was faced with one of the rudest men we had come into contact with during our whole trip! We obviously still went, and did end up having a good day there. We saw lots of crocs up close, and got to play with some wallabies and kangaroos, and sadly just stroke, not hug a koala!

Cairns wasn't really what we expected. It didn't really seem like it had much to offer, and was worlds away from Sydney. No modern high rises or plush bars and restaurants.

This morning, we're up early to catch our flight to Singapore. We're flying from the Domestic terminal, as we have a connection in Sydney. We don't really know what to expect from Singapore, but we're really looking forward to it. We've booked in for 3 nights at a hotel with no windows (we can't afford the hotels that offer natural light!) and will see when we get there if we want to stay longer. If not, it's on to Thailand!

See you in South East Asia!
