Knowledge review day! I persuaded Martin to let us do them around the pool at his house rather than being stuck in the classroom all day. Much better idea no? They used the idea to take some photos of us reading our books in the pool for the website, new way of teaching huh? After doing all of the reviews we had lunch at their house before rushing over to Rich Coast to go on the boat. We were meant to have Martijn as our instructor for mapping but Martin decided we didn't need him. Instead it's just me, Jade and Zack going on our own, exciting!
Standardly though it didn't quite work out that way. We were meant to do two dives but only ended up doing one as we had literally dropped Martin and Maarten in the middle of the ocean for their tech course and Jaime our captain didn't want to then drop us off really far away in case any of us had an accident
After we managed to get one dive while Martin and Maarten sat on the boat. They gave us half an hour to map Supresa. It was definitely fun with just the three of us. We ended up seeing quite a lot too, lots of rays and tons of huge eels, including again ones who were just out swimming about. At one point I pointed up to Zack because his favourites, the tuna, were up circling us again. I carried on and a minute later turned around to see where Zack was and saw him 4 metres above me completely distracted by the tuna haha.
We did a pretty good mapping job but didn't make it all the way round the pinnacle. Because I at least got to 28m I thought it would be better to be conservative with our air and so we started to go back to the mooring line (there's a new mooring at supresa too now!) on 1,500 PSI (half a tank). Even thought it was fairly easy to find the mooring I was still proud of us all for getting back there. I had to keep getting us all to ascend a little bit though because we only had about 8 minutes of time left before we would have hit our no deco time (not good).
So after we'd washed all of the gear when we got back I went on a mission to get my bike back that was still locked to the shop! Thankfully Dan who owns Coconutz had some bolt cutters so I finally managed to get my bike back! Yay no more walking for ages to work!
So it's my birthday today and I started off the day opening some cards from home. For the first time on this trip I feel a bit homesick, I think I'm so used to being in England for my birthday, or at least with my family for it when I had birthdays in France, that it feels a bit odd. Saying that my birthdays are usually a bit of a disappointment, I tend to have a more enjoyable time at Christmas. I think this is because, as I've said before, I expect it to be a day for ME but it inadvertently never works out that way so it ends up never living up to expectations.
I decided to work today and take the next day off instead. I thought it would be nice to go diving on my birthday too. We were back mapping today with me, Jade, Julian, Zack and Barbara. We ended up just doing estudientes where Zack and Julian are mapping. We've now discovered we have to do the measurements with a line and reel which isn't too helpful for my map as I've already done two dives there minus this measuring technique. Everything went ok at estudientes although by the end of it when we'd looped round I was so confused as to where we were! After we went to Argentina to do their last deep dive for their speciality. The water was definitely a tad cold! We saw a ton of rays though and including the white tip reef shark at estudientes it was a not too shabby birthday morning
After work I headed over to Tabby's to get ready for my birthday bonfire. By the time I'd got ready it was time to leave but everyone else wasn't ready so we ended up being nearly an hour late. I thought everyone would be late anyway, which they were, except Martin and Brenda who'd obviously got there on time. Oops. Luckily I had some minions in the form of Taylor, Zack, Tyler and Maarten who were busy building the bonfire before I arrived. They'd actually got a pretty good amount there but a lot of it was dry brush which meant it was going to burn out quickly. In fact when we lit it, it was actually alarming large for about 5 minutes and with it being windy it both made it bigger and would occasionally throw small bits of fire at people.
Tabby and I went on a hunt for some more fuel for the fire and only managed to find a small amount. Zack and Tyler told us they'd found a large log to use but would need help lifting it. Now I imagined that it would be maybe 3, 4? Metres but no it was more like 8-10 metres. Go large or go home right? So that was the fire sorted for the rest of the evening! So bonfire makers, thanks for your lovely fire :)
It was nice that there was good amount of people there and Tom, the cook from Coconutz arrived at some point with a little cake and everyone sang happy birthday to me, which is always nice! It ended up being a fairly quiet birthday night though. Some people were still hungover from the day before so went home early and everyone else I think got drunk really quickly so by 11:30 it was only me and Maarten left. We decided to have a drink in town but it was empty so we just ended up going home. But yeah it's not been too bad a birthday, thanks to all who came out for it :)
