Today I was meant to be in the shop again but I ended up doing a DSD with Tom in the pool instead. The couple who were doing it were really nice although the woman was a little bit nervous. They were actually pretty good though, usually DSD's are kind of like Bambi on ice, but underwater, these guys however seemed to take to it pretty well. This counts towards my course so Tom briefed me afterwards. He said I did good but that I talk too much, colour me surprised. I've always found it hard to shut up! At least I can't talk underwater huh?
The instructor exams start this afternoon and everyone passed, so congrats the first step guys. I was actually nervous for them, they have so much to remember/do, it must be pretty nerve racking
The DMT's started the day by helping out with the IE (instructor exams), we basically took all of their stuff to the pool. Their instructor is totally the guy doing the skills in the PADI dive master video. Famous.
Today definitely had a theme of confusion, silly decisions and mentalness that started at 7:30am with the truck loading. We were told we had to go to the beach first so we loaded the truck with most of the tanks. Then we were told we actuall had to go to the pool first. We therefore loaded that stuff on and I said why didn't we put some of the bags for the beach on then go to the pool, unload and then go to the beach and do the first trip as we had to do two anyway. This apparently wasn't a good idea and so we just went to the pool with all of the stuff and then drove back despite being at the beach. Then we ended up doing only one trip.
We did the deep dive today at Supresa, where I did my deep specialities. Supresa whenever I've gone has been kind of average but today it was lovely. We went down and it was pretty clear. We immediately saw a ray and a speckled eel just swimming about, you don't usually see the massive ones out and about but recently I've seen loads, it's been pretty awesome. We then went down to the deepest part so Zack and Jade could do their tasks. As we got down a huge school of tuna came over and were circling above us for 5 minutes. I'm glad I had no tasks to do so I was able to just look at them. Zack was also rather distracted at first and was kind of sat on the bottom with his arms outstretched towards the tuna, whilst rotating haha. A current kick in so we had to move because they couldn't really do their tasks when we were being dragged off. We went into the reef to steady ourselves and I found some fishing net/line stuck on the reef so cut it out using Zack's knife. I really need to get one of these.
The second dive was at Tortuga for the mapping project. We did quite a big area but it was hard to concentrate sometimes because we saw some amazing stuff. We went all the way down to the wreck which was really pretty today and on the way back I saw the saddest thing ever (and very sad). I saw a little puffer fish all inflated and we realised that an octopus had it. The poor little thing was flapping its teeny flippers trying to get away. We did attempt to rescue it slightly but the octopus had a super grip on it and every time we tried it got one of its arms and curled round the puffer again! Circle of life and all that but still made me really sad to see it, I love those things! Then we saw a lot of sharks and on the way back a spotted eagle ray right next to us eating. I was like ooh pretty and then ooh shit mapping haha. So yeah we had two awesome dives really.
Back on the boat we found out one of us would be helping out on the IE boat later as Julian had walked out again. Zack was meant to be doing it and went off to do so when Laura told Barbara that Jay, a guy finishing his rescue, was coming in at 2pm to complete it, except Zack was also doing it. We then sent Jade off to go but the boat left without her. So today has been kind of disorganised!
The IE finished today and everyone passed, it's also Nicole's last night so we all went out to coconutz to celebrate with them. It was the most ridiculously funny night. We ended up doing dances like the macarena and it was also karaoke night there. Tom kept putting people down for ridiculous songs that started not too mentally with 'We are the champions', and rapidly descended it karaoke chaos with everyone singing 'Barbie Girl'. I told Tom we HAD to get Martin to do a song, he ended up putting him down for Right Said Fred, 'I'm too sexy'.... He wasn't going to do it but we managed to persuade him and him and Tom basically sung it together with everyone else joining in parts of it. Weirdly it was the best song we had managed to do all night as well as incredibly hilarious. I haven't laughed that long for a while!
