I've finally landed on the island of Koh Tao!  The overnight train from Bangkok to Chumporn was certainly an adventure.  When a stop was coming up, the lady attendant would open the door and you'd basically have to hop out before the train started moving again!  It was kind of fun though!  The sun hadn't come up yet when I disembarked in Chomporn and I was worried about being dropped off in the middle of nowhere as the previous stops were nothing more than a sign in the ground next to the tracks!  But as soon as I stepped of the train, all my fears went away.  Since Chomporn is such a major jumping off point for Koh Tao, Koh Samui and Koh Phang Nag, there was hussle and bussle everywhere.  I found the catamaran company I had booked with very easily and they shuttle me and 7 young English men to their office.  We waited around for about10 minutes and then boarded a luxury bus for the 30 minute drive to the catamaran.

Koh Tao is beautful!  The Black Tip Dive Resort had a driver waiting for me at the pier which was nice because I didn't have to hassle with a taxi.  Although I use the word taxi loosely - they are pick-up trucks with seat in the bed!  On the taxi ride to the resort, I met a nice couple for NYC.  They are moving to San Fran after their 4 month trip throughout Asia.  I hope I wasn't salivating too obvisously!

My bungalow at Black Tip wa rustic but nice.  The only downside was the hilly walk to the water which was a trek in the heat.  I had planned on getting my scuba certification but changed my mind at the last minute and decided to wait for a time when Terra and I can do it together.  I snorkled right off the beach at Black Tip and saw some really cool marine life.  Unfortunately I did bring MY snorkle gear from home and for the price to rent, I just went ahead and bought new.  Oh well...  I then caught the taxi back to the pier where I rented an ATV.  There are more scooters than ATV's but I opted for the more expensive ATV because I would have to make my way back to Black Tip for the night and the roads weren't paved and in really bad shape.  Otherwise I would have gotten a scooter.

Since I wouldn't be doing the scuba class, there was no reason for me to stay at Black Tip since its pretty secluded (which at times is a good thing) and I wanted to check out the rest of the island.  I headed out on my ATV to check out Sairee Beach and see if anyone had any bungalows available.

Wow
It looks beautiful! Is there where the movie the 'Beach' was filmed?

Re: Wow
No, I think they filed it on Koh Samui. I have much better pics of Koh Tao but I still can't upload them. I'll have to wait until I get home.
