A whole new wave of bikers flowed through the campsite next evening in Brookings, just north of the California boarder. And they all seemed to know each other so the chat was mighty. And they didn't seem to realize that they didn't know me so I was included in it all!

The talk was mainly of the big hills just south of Crescent City just 30 miles away. At this stage though I think I'm half girl, half goat coz I like the hills. You drop gear and slow to walking pace but it's usually a steady climb and more often than not, where there's a climb, there's some fantastic scenery.

And Crescent City didn't fail! After the first 30 miles and refueled at second brekkie, the road climbed for about 5 miles into gorgeous Redwood forest. The trees were like sky-scrapers and created an erie, silent atmosphere along the road. Every few minutes it would be just you on the road and the sound of silence. And talk about feeling small - I felt like an ant!

Closer to the top of the climb, the silence was broken only by a passing car or the sound of a bicyclator woo hoo'ing as they dropped over the summit into the long downhill descent.

Later in the afternoon, the road winded and twisted through more redwoods and it was just bliss - the sun was warm, the road was easy and traffic light. I ended the day with 75 miles on the clock but it only felt like half that! At camp, the travelling bikers regrouped to swap stories of the day past. And marvel at how great the showers were!

Next day I got my first flat tyre! Thankfully, I was just about to turn off 101 for the little town of Arcata when I felt a funny rumbling (at fist mistook it for my tummydemanding food). Anyway, by the magic of a tube fix kit my sister gave me and the leverage power of a little vanity mirror, I got the tyre off and tube repaired.

The spectacular Avenue of the giants awaited the next day. The road took me off 101 again and through more stunning redwood forest. I camped on the State Park that night surrounded by trees. It was so warm I even ventured a swim in the river which was bliss.
