Where I stayed
Portland, OR
Devils Lake State Park, Lincoln City
The second day of the trip across to Portland was fine - mostly flat and only 30 miles to where I needed to be. I was under instruction to get on the MAX - like the Daniel Day - from Hillsboro into central Portland. There I was meeting Michael and spending a few days with him, his wife and two smalls.
I've been here two days now and Portland's a great city. It's not the 'inyourface kinda-place' that New York is. I reckon you could make P-town feel like home very quickly. For a city of 2 million or so people, if feels much smaller.
Around the corner from the house, there's a great 'neighbourhood' street with cafes, a fantabulous bookshop and cool restaurants and a cinema where you can bring in your beer and grub. I went to a 'film' there which turned out to be a talk given about water by Jacque Cousteau's grand-daughter. I was good - only problem being all that talk of water and me with a beer or two in me....
The city is also in the shadow of Mt. Hood which looks spectacular in the sunshine (which, like clockwork, starts to shine about 2pm each day)! There's a beautiful rose garden too ....cue lots of attempts at trying to get a nice pic of a rose.
And so i leave tomorrow coz I'm half afraid I'll put down roots and never make the rest of the journey. I've just over 900 miles behind me and I figure the same again ahead of me. So, unbelievably, I'm probably half way to wherever I end!!
Time flies.....
