I heard many people talk about the Great Ocean Road but never thought it would be that great. It turned out to be a perfect weekend! Andreas was in Melbourne for the weekend to join in, we rented a car and drove down to Torquay on Friday afternoon after work. Torquay is like a small shopping outlet for all surfing supplies and clothes, nothing special, but still a nice place at the ocean. We partied hard and enjoyed the backpacker down there.
The next day our tour started early. We drove along the windy roads directly at the coast, giving us spectacular views of to the ocean. The weather was fine and the place gorgeous!! Sometimes it is hard to believe what you see with turning the corners of the road. All couple of hundred meters are lookouts giving you the opportunity to stop and enjoy the awesome views. And to be honest, it is very hard not to stop at all of them. Furthermore the other side of the road is built with huge rain forests and hills, making you wonder which side to stare at first! Short rainforest walks are offered as additional stops to the lookouts, taking you to many magnificent rain forest waterfalls through adventurous paths. This very much reminded me of New Zealand, was very nice! On the way we stopped to watch strange birds, we saw an Ichidna digging for food and I almost stepped on tiger snake, it took off just in time before that though.
The road just went on and on and the sights were brilliant at all times. The water unbelievable blue and green. On the way we saw our first Koala in free nature. Very cute little bugger, he was just meandering next to the road, completely not bothered with anything happening around him. We stopped to take some pictures, which made the Koala stop, too, giving both of us a curious look, and then very slowly trotting on.
We also caught up with our old colleague Ricardo from Germany, who went on a 5 months trip to Australia at that time together with his wife Andrea. Was a nice get together and we stayed together at the camp ground of Port Campbell sipping German beer next to the fire place. We visited the 12 Apostles and the Bay of Islands, other well known spots of the magnificent road. Actually there are only 8 Apostles left, 4 already collapsed into the ocean before, but the view wasn't any less spectacular.
What a weekend!
