After our sailing trip we immediately took off to make our way north and to Cairns. But we underestimated the distance and ended up a night in Townsville, the big mining center of Australia. You could tell the place was a bit dodgy at places and not all of the efforts to improve the city helped too much. We found a vacancy at a motel after searching for a while, a motel that did not have aircon. So we spent a night at about 60 degrees, which naturally was a short night because of that (ok, maybe its just been 40 degrees, but it felt hot).
The next day we made our way to Cairns where we booked a scenic flight over the Great Barrier Reef that same day. We went there expecting to jump on a helicopter but were surprised by a real plane, but we didn't mind too much. The flight offered stunning view of the Reef, I kept on shooting pictures every second, just magnificent from way up there!
Then we went on to Port Douglas where we checked into a very nice hotel - although any hotel probably would've been nice after the previous night - and explored Port Douglas for a while before having a dinner at a nice place at the esplanade.
The next day we booked a guided tour to the rain forest and it turned out we were the only guests of that tour, which was very pleasant. The guide was very funny and entertained us as well as showing us the interesting places around, the rain forest, the gauges and everything we needed to see. So quite a nice trip.
In the evening - our last night of the trip - we booked a fancy buffet dinner and ate until we couldn't speak any more, but really delicious food for sure! In the morning Tilman made me get up at 4 am so I could take him to the airport for his flight to Sydney before I flew back to Melbourne midday myself, where Tilman would visit me a couple of days later.
