Today we had class and discussed academic education versus vocational education, in the U.S. and Ghana. Tomorrow we will visit a vocational high school to see how it is done in Ghana. After class we had free time. Heather and I decided to go to get some lunch and then hang out for part of the afternoon at the residence. The streets here in our neighborhood are not in a grid system but rather a system of concentric circles that intersect at certain points with other roads. It is super easy to get turned around and lost especially since the first few days they have been driving us in a van. Needless to say we got a little lost, not terribly but when it is 80+ degrees, humid and you are as old and out of shape as I am, it is not fun. We eventually found our way to where we wanted to go and of course our other classmates were there and they had taken the correct route. Ugh. It was a character building experience. Back to the residence after lunch, the short way, and to rest a bit. We then all hopped into taxis to go to Osu to look for fabric to have shirts and dresses made. In Osu however there really was only premade clothes so Heather and I ducked into a store called Global Mamas. This store is a fair trade, NGO run business that helps with women run businesses making different kinds of crafts. I bought a new bandanna, a bracelet and some earrings all for a decent price considering it was in a brick and mortar store. After that we went to Koala supermarket, the fancy supermarket in Accra. It has a lot of American and European brands at crazy prices. A box of cornflakes was about $8.50 and a small jar of nutella was about $7.00. Needless to say we did not indulge but instead bought some soda. We hopped a taxi and went back to rest before dinner. Dinner discussion was rather funny because at some point we all were discussing the merits and misuses of Facebook and other social media. Of course I recommended " Chimpanzee riding on a segway" as a classic piece of youtube madness and genius. Then off to bed.
