Leaving the delightful town of Arequipa, we had a 3 day tour in the Colca Canyon - the World´s second deepest canyon at 3,191 metres and only 50 metres shallower than the nearby Cotahuasi Canyon. Not sure where the Grand Canyon features!

Passing through traditional villages we were struck by the beautiful colours of the local women´s traditional embroidered clothing and hats. The whole area felt incredibly dry and this is not helped by the fast that only 20% of the available terraces are farmed due to vital water being diverted to coastal areas to help with their water shortages.

During our trip we saw Vicunas, the endangered wild cousins of the llama and it was also strange to see llamas and alpacas being herded like flocks of sheep! One night we were entertained by a local family and as well as helping to prepare our traditional Peruvian meal, we were encouraged to try the speciality of Peru cuisine....guinea pig. Sonia backed out but out of politeness I tried the dish and lets just say it will be a one off!

On our final day we encountered Andean condors - the biggest in the World with a wing span of over 3 metres. Seeing up to 12 in the air at one time was an awesome sight and their graceful flying on the thermal air currents was a photographers dream. It was a great finale to our 3 day trip.
