June 28

We set off for Cesis today… it is northeast of Riga. But we stopped at the Motor Museum for an hour or so on the way. Very interesting range of very old and newer cars of eastern Europe vintage. Included were some huge and somewhat comically "retro" soviet luxury cars, some of which belonged to Stalin and his officials. The highlight was a smashed Rolls of 1980s vintage, which Leonid Breshnev crashed in Moscow, and a 1980s era huge Lincoln Continental which he was given by Richard Nixon..

Cesis was a small country town with a dramatic old castle from the 14th C. We camped about 4 km out of the town in a lovely campground on a river, with white sand beaches… and a million mosquitoes! Luckily the van kept most of them out, and we had insect repellant which held the dozens that did manage to get in, at bay.
