June 18:
From Sopot to Malbork Castle in Central Poland. Malbork is one of the largest and most authentic brick castles in the world. It was the centre for the Teutonic Knights from the 12th C through the 15th C, and a very dramatic place to visit. Rather than a tour, we took out audio tour players… essentially small ipod with numbered locales with audio descriptions. It took a good 2 hours to tour through the crowds of school children and cruise ship groups, but the weather was fine, and the castle was great.
This evening we came across a lovely little campground just off the highway halfway between Malbork an Bialystok. It was on a lake… very tranquil despite being just off the highway… just us and one other couple in the campground, with fish jumping and lake rippling.
