This political cartoon is similar to one in today's El Paso Times. Thursday we toured El Paso's Opportunity Center, a multi-plexed site assisting the homeless in various configurations. Staffer Sr. Elise remarked that the majority of the folks she serves there have mentally disabilities and mental illnesses. Not unlike the deranged shooter who took lives at Virginia Tech, causing all flags in the nation to fly at half-mast as we mourn the violent deaths.
What are we doing to help those with illness and disabilities? There are too few Opportunity Centers, private agencies doing the impossible with miniscule resources. And there are far too many military outposts, attempting the impossible job of creating a peaceful world through violent means. And they are using the resources of our grandchildren, as we pile up a $2 Trillion Dollar debt in Iraq. For nothing.
How can we sleep through the nightly newscasts that review from dozens to hundreds of daily deaths in Iraq and not make the connection that each deceased person there means just as much to their families and friends as does each of the 33 deaths at Virginia Tech?
