Well, El Paso is the poorest major metropolitan area in Texas, and the fifth poorest city in the U.S.! Nevertheless, thousands of immigrants pass through here each year, many of them unaccompanied children who are fleeing abuse, neglect and/or persecution. Cut off from their families, these children can't afford a lawyer and have to represent themselves in immigration court. Las Americas believes these kids deserve zealous legal representation, giving free legal assistance to nearly 600 children each year.

Their archives, containing files on all the people Las Americas ever represented, were still back at their former office building. The client files created since the year 2000 had to be sorted out, and the older files must be electronically scanned to disk before shredding. But first, all the files have to get moved to their new building before the end of January. So Paul and I tackled this sorting and packing of files, keeping them in alphabetical order and boxing them up. Photos show "before and after."

Our first day "on the job" we stopped into the Methodist church across the street from the old office to see if we could park in their lot while we were working. The pastor, when he heard what we were doing, gave us free parking and added, "Let me know if they need a truck to move those boxes." Sr. Liliane was overjoyed with this offer, and before the end of January, with two borrowed trucks, 4 men and a cart-Paul and I proudly moved all the sorted files to the new Las Americas property.
